I didn't want to get involved in this, because this thread had turned south. But before we hand out so many accolades to our veteran brethren who should be worshipped. I noticed this post.

P.S. please post pictures of flight, thanks. I have read many of Terrelflyer's posts, and it is obvious he knows what he's talking about, but I have to ask "Is this one productive?" |
Oh, and...
I only have about 9 months in the hobby, so pardon me for breathing.

ok. this is really getting out of hand... first of all.. the number of posts you write doesn't determine how good you are.. i for one wrote 96 posts in 3 months.. and know about 99 percent less than most of you here.. but it doesn't take a lot of brain to realise.. that one wrong inexperienced move.. and your plane is 6 feet under.. how can you even argue about the fact that a trainer will be the best solution for a newbie??? did i say that it wasn't???
everybody knows.. by reading these posts. that a trainer is the recommended (sorry.. STRONGLY recommended choice) for a beginner.. my friend stated from the beginning of the post.. that he doesn't want to get a trainer... that's his problem... he asked what plane would be ease to fly.. with similar characterists as a 4*... so let's not get offended.. all you 60 year experts.. if somebody doesn't want to buy a trainer... as i already told you.. i will fly my 4* only after i can fly a trainer just like you guys fly your 300 extras.....i'm not stupid to solo on it on the first day.. it costs money you know.. anyways.. i wish we can end this on a good note.. because i hope none of your feelings were touched... -eugn |

I am a newbie who has read the beginners forums for about 3 months now and I have to say that MinnFlyer and TerrellFlyer give some of the best advice that I have seen. Its obvious they have a lot of experience with R/C and I for one am thankful they are willing to help us beginners out. They obviously want to see people get started in this hobby and see them succeed in flying their planes. I doubt this forum would be half as helpful if not for their participation. Thanks.

I agree, There is no sense in beating this dead horse any longer.
The consensus is if you are a newbie, Get a trainer and an instructor. However, you are an adult and it's your money so good luck if do decide to go otherwise. |

you guys still don't get it.. what's the difference.. to fly somebody elses trainer.. or to by one for your self.. and fly it???
nobody is gonna try to train on anything other than a trainer they only difference (if you buy it).. is that you always have a trainer at hand... that way you can always practice on it..when you feel you need to.... i get this feeling.. that people think that i'm gonna by a 300 exta.. and go fly it right away...:) |

If you noticed, In one of my first posts, it was ME who sugested a Tiger if he REALLY didn't want a trainer. I would never say that you MUST start with a trainer-type plane. I, for one, like to start people out with something more advanced, but only people who I am close enough to that I know they won't be going to the field either alone, or with another instructor (people like my own family members). There are advantages and disadvantages to learning on any type of plane. The only point I want to make is that flying comes easier to some that to others. The only way to find out which catagory you fit into is to get a plane in the air. I would hate to recommend anything that someone is not capable of flying. On the other hand, you can never out-grow a trainer. Once you have learned how to fly, a trainer can be used to piggy-back a glider up, or drop a parachute, or tow a banner, or hundreds of other things.
Fly whatever you want to. Just do it safely, with a clear understanding of the rewards and heartbreaks, and more importantly, the fun, and the danger. |

you've got it right on the spot, MinnFlyer!

I think the most people on here just want a beginner to succeed. There is nothing more rewarding than landing your rc plane for the first time. I really hate for someone new into rc planes try it wreck and not get into it at all because of a mishap.
At the club if someone drives up and asked about flying or how to get into it and all I am always more than willing to help out. Help build and get them in the air. It is always a lot of fun getting a new member to join a club. I am sure any club you go to most people are very helpful with any questions or anything like that. I guess in the end it becomes the weekend hobby to have fun, tell stories and a really good excuse to get away from the wife.....kidding.. :D I think I spend more time talking and cutting up with the other members than I do flying at times. There is always a funny "my plane did this" story out there. |

Hey guys:
I just want to thank everyone again for being so helpfull, your comments and inputs are greatly appreciated. The reason why I don't want to get a trainer is because I signed up at a local club, where I will take flying lessons on a trainer while I'm building my plane, and I'm also thinking about buying a simulator to help speed up my learning proccess. However, I do want to get an easy to fly airplane that has some more capability than a trainer. I've looked at the Tiger planes and was wandering if there are anymore planes that I should look at before I make my final descision. Thanks |

I just finished a Golgberg Sr. Falcon trainor, It fly's well so I'm told as I did not fly it yet. Next weather permitting day. Anyway I am now working on a Golgberg Tiger II which they say is a good low wing aerobatic plan for beginner and intermediate flyer. After that I'll start on my prize F4U Corsair. Good Luck

Simple Plastic Airplane
I don't think anyone mentioned the good old SPAD for training yet. It seems another option...low cost...easy build...easy repair...fun...simple...quick...no balsa sticks to mess with....no iron on covering....and the acronym makes it sound like you are a test pilot for a secret government project. :p
There is lots of info on them here as well as links to other sites with even more info. |

Matter fact I just came across 4 pieces of 4'x4' boards. Just now not to sure what to make with them. I checked out the site but still thinking of something to go with. Maybe a fun-fly or try to make something 3D. Nothing is more fun than hanging by the prop 1' from the ground.

Hey Man. I was in your delima last year. I have been flying for 3 years but I bought all my airplanes used from J J Freestyle. He and I live in the same city only 12 miles apart. I just finished my very first kit, which was a Sig 4-Star 40. There are very easy to build. If I were you, since you've never built and airplane before, but are wanting to do a kit. I would do any of the Sig 4-Star's. I prefer the 60 size because you can clip the wing bays on each side (just one on each side) and that will make the airplane able to inverted flat spin with an O.S. .91 Four Stroker. It's an AWESOME AIRPLANE! Who care's what your friend has. Get what is high quality and and flys awesome. Your friend isn't a fool. Go with a Sig 4-Star kit.

Thanks for the reply
I'm building the tiger 2 because it came at a good price. My brother has a bunch of unbuilt kits that he bought many years ago. So he gives them to me as he don't think he'll be building them any time soon. When I finish one he gives me another so I get the building experience and he's happy to know that they got off the ground. NGH00d |
