I'm looking for ideas of how to store airplanes. I'm brand spankin new to this, but have 3 planes already... I can't keep occupying space on my work bench, I don't have room to work!

BTW, is having a constant layer of CA glue on your finger tips just part of the hobby, or am just a messy gluer??

To much glue, maybe, but who cares? Do you?

Here's what I did for storage. You'll need two of each per plane:

* Shelving L-Bracket
* 1/2" PVC pipe
* Pipe Insulation
* Zip Ties
* Screws

I used 12" brackets, cut the PVC pipe to 16", screwed and zipped the PVC pipe to the bracket and attached to the wall. Then I used electrical tape (duct would work also) to attach the pipe insulation, after I trimmed to fit. Remember two for each plane, spaced out accordingly. Now store your wing towards the back, vertically (Leading edge down) and fuse up front.

Works great!

my storage shelves are similar,I use two adjustable shelfbars with adj shelfbrackets,then I slide on a piece of foam over the bracket.Borrow some wax from your wife next time she is ironing,rub some on the finger tips,will help the glue problem.

Thanks for the great idea... I'm a little low on wall space, but, I should be able to get several planes in a 60 in. width (stacked from floor to ceiling).

I'll try the wax, thanks for that one too...

Just curios, any good ideas for transporting the bed of a truck? I have a roll top bed cover. I suppose PVC with insulation may do the trick their also... (Sorry for tacking on to this thread, I didn't feel like starting a new one)

Get a couple of shower curtain rods from walmart. Cover them with pipe insulation and then strap the planes to these with bungee cords.

I'm assuming the wax will keep CA glue from crapping your fingers.

Morning CHassan,guess I'm showing I grew up in the country,while ironing startched cloths the iron would stick, rub the iron over a brick of wax would stop the sticking.I keep a couple of wax bricks in the building room for odd and end building,rub screws on wax helps screw in easier.rub wax on hinge line hit with heat gun keeps glue off hinge,working with glue I rub my finger tips on the wax,keeps the glue out of the finger groves,fingers clean up better,also stops glueing fingers to wood.I buy the wax in 1# bricks,wax can be used for canning,candle making,etc.

I am really curious about what your wife uses wax for when she is ironing.

As for keeping the ca off your fingers. I find that a liberal application of hand lotion after I am done building takes most of it off within a day or so.


Edit---Oh. Never heard of that before. Our iron has teflon on the bottom...

morning ctdahle, today my iron has teflon also,but in the early 50's our house didn't even have electricty or indoor plumbing,we cooked and ironed at the same time because we set the iron on the wood stove to heat it up,had a choice between wife or planes 5 years ago,so I HAVE NO idea what my exwife irons with,while married she didn't.

kinda hard to regulate that iron temp thought ehh?
As far as the wax for ironing, I've always had a non-stick iron, teflon coating or what not. guess I've been lucky. Is this just a beeswax, or something like it. Or are we talking more like parafin?

He is talking about parafin, and if you don't want to go out and buy a big brick of it, you can get a smaller one at your grocery store. They generally keep it with the canning supplies. (You pour melted parafin on top of your home-made apple jelly to seal the jar)

I am skeptical that the wax is going to help much in keeping the CA off your fingers, but it is handy for lubricating screws and that sort of thing. Me, i just pry my fingers away from the wood and keep on going. The skin grows back eventually. :D

The CA drys out the skin when it is in contact with it. If you are patient, when your skin replenishes the moisture, the CA will peel off. I usually can peel it off atfter a shower.
