Plastic Wing & Tail Tips or Caps
I've got an older Hobbico Avistar 40 that has plastic molded wing tip (caps?) and a similar cap on the tail. I broke and lost the cap on the tail. They only replace the entire tail set and wing set. The cost is a wee bit high for which parts actually need replacing. Does any one know where I might find those parts? Wing tips or Tail caps?

dont know where you can find the plastic, but if you dont have any luck finding them then try just carving new pieces from balsa. justa balsa block cut and sanded to shape.

RE: Plastic Wing & Tail Tips or Caps
I had that happen on my Tiger Trainer .40 (RIP). It will fly fine without the caps on the tail, but if you really don't like the way it looks, try to cover it with white monokote or make a cap from a coke bottle and cover it with monokote.
Make top and bottom flat pieces using the other cap as a pattern, remember it's reversed. Use a 1/4" strip of plastic cut from a 2L coke bottle to join the two pieces together. (Use hinge tape on the INSIDE of the cap to keep the pieces together). Put it on and cover with monokote. I did this and it only looked OK after about 2 hrs of work. A week later I found my old cap in my truck.:eek: |
RE: Plastic Wing & Tail Tips or Caps
agepert & superflea,
Thanks for the tips and sorry to hear about your Tiger Trainer. Unfortunately I lost the cap out at the field so I'm not sure how tall to make it. I did speak with someone at Hobbico and they said it would be O.K. to fly it as is. I have a small crack on one of the wingtips as well so I'll need to glue it up. Any suggestions on what kind of glue to use? I might try to carve a new tail piece out of balsa. If any one else has any ideas I'd love to hear em. Thanks again. ;) |
RE: Plastic Wing & Tail Tips or Caps
When the tail caps on my Global Right Flyer were too terrible to lok at, my brother carved new ones out of balsa and glued them on. He stripped the covering off of the stabilizer and fin; and recovered them. This isn't always necessary but my covering was peeling and needed to be redone. When the wing tip caps got just as bad, I removed them and ironed covering on the end of the wing. It was not gorgeous but it flew the same as always.
