How do choose a die.

I have no idea how to choose a die to thread 0.078" music wire!

Is it as simple as getting a die with the same thickness wire?

And 0.078" is almost 2mm. If I need a 'standard' sized die, what would that be?

Thanks!

You won't be able to cut threads in music wire. It's too hard. Typically, hard bolts or rods are theaded in a "rolling" process, which makes the size of the threads larger than the size of the original rod diameter.

What is it you're going to connect? Perhaps prethreaded pushrod wire would work, or perhaps we could suggest another solution.

standard sizes are 5-56 thread and 4-40. your store bought threaded pushrods have roled threads. you can tell they'er rolled buy the fact the thread is bigger that the wire and they'er round instead of shap threads. the machine to do this yourself would be cost prohibitive, I'm sure some knows of a cheap roller.

Good thing I asked. That would have been fun trying to thread unthreadable wire. [:@]

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to install my landing gear in my GWS Formosa (1 pound foam 'Pattern' plane). I was going to thread the wire into a small block of wood and then glue that into hole that's already there.

I've already got the wire. I was originally just going to drill the hole in the wood and epoxy it in. It's not going to take a lot of abuse (I hope!) but I was concerned that it may fall out. But now that I think about it, if I do that, it may likely turn in the hole, putting the wheels out of alignment, sooner than it would fall out.

Maybe I'm better off at making an L bend in the wire and sandwiching it between 2 pieces of wood?

I think you probably meant "2-56" ?

That sounds better.

Good luck,

I'll try that. Thanks.

G'day Mate, just solder a threaded coupler onto the wire, I assume you know how to solder, if not clean the wire with sand paper so it is shiny, don't touch it as this will dirty it again. apply non acid soldering flux, then heat with iron & apply solder to "tin' the wire then tin inside the brass coupler, again using flux & solder, then heat the coupler & insert the tinned wire & don't move it until cooled, Bingo perfect solder joint.
Good Flying Mate.
Allan.

Maybe this is too obvious... What do the instructions tell you to do?

Instructions? What are those? Do they come with a manual? ;)

I purchased version of the plane that doesn't come with landing gear. I found the gear on my first Formosa, one that come with gear, a bit weak and wanted to make it stronger. The slightly thicker wire doesn't fit into the landing gear bracket so I'm having to invent my own.

I've already drilled out the blocks and bent some wire. Looks like it will work.
