After an absence of more years than I can remember, I've recently got the R/C bug again. I started to get into this hobby years ago, took about 5 flights (self taught) before I crashed. Got sidetracked with life and am back but now want to do it right.
I've been reading some of the beginner advice posted here for the past few months and am starting a new "smarter" (I hope) approach to getting back in to R/C. I've purchased the G2 flight trainer and will use that until sometime in the spring of next year to find an experienced flier here in the Boulder, CO area to guide me through to solo. I have some general questions regarding newer glues, coverings, etc that have come on the market since I last built kits. (Maybe this belong in another forum?) Back in the "good old days" I used Titebond & Monocote (I also built U control line stuff), "dope", etc. I want to build up a couple of trainers and want your advice about what are the best glues, coverings, paint to use for these projects. There are an entirely new set of glues, paints, & coverings since I last dinked around with this stuff and I want to start off on the right foot. (Actually I'll still continue to use both feet) I prefer practical advice from people who have "been there, done that" rather than rely on adverts to give me the straight scoop. Thanks in advance for any advice you can send my way. This is an incredible source of information! |

Most of the r/c is about the same ,mainly the quality of equiment is much improved,ca glue and epoxy is faster, best advice I can give is to find a flying club that has instructors to teach you, also find a club that has menbers you'll enjoy being with.

I prefer practical advice from people who have "been there, done that" Dura-Planes and AirCores have been around for about 10 years or so, but it wasn't untill about 5 years ago that some of us began to realize that the materials they use (gutterpipe and plastic sign board) are dirt cheap when bought at home improvement stores and sign shops. The evolution of designs with these materials has caught up to and in some cases exceeded the performance and especially durability of conventionaly built airplanes...so I've traded in my Monocote iron, $100 kits and sand paper in for $10 airplanes, screws and zip-ties... and am having more fun scratchbuilding and designing than I ever imagined possible in this hobby. It's not for everyone, and like I said, old habits die hard, but it is an option to check out if you're interested. http://www.spadtothebone.com |

Funny you should mention that. I visited your site yesterday and was thinking "Now why didn't I think of that?". Great idea.
I'm a scale nut and eventually want to get to building out a giant scale Spitfire Mk IX. I realize I have a long, long way to go before I get there but wanted to build up a couple of balsa kits to get back in the grove of kit building. I figure I'll need to build 6 to 8 balsa projects before I even attempt to start working on a giant scale war-bird. I look at it as a lot of time to do research. From a practical perspective, after I go though the winter of "flying" the G2 Realflight simulator, I'll probably try one of your SPADs just to get in the air to get the real feel of it again. I nice mix of simulator, SPAD & balsa should eventually get me to the point where I want to be. Isn't this a great hobby? I'm lovin' it, even though I've hardly gotten my feet wet. Thanks for your feedback! |
