Futaba servo gear set replacement

I'm replacing the gear train in a Futaba S3003 servo. The gear set is all nylon. On the original set some of the gear members have a white lubricant. Does anyone know what type of lubricant the manufacturer uses on these nylon gears????

Thanks, Bert

I don't know specifically about the gears you are referring to, but Lithium grease is common for gears in other applications. Others will confirm or deny for you.

yep...white lithium grease....

some people use other types of grease.. and it could open a discussion 7 pages long on which one is better, worse.. will make your plane fly better, increase your sex drive, et. al, etc. etc. ad nauseum,,,:D

but just good ole white lithium grease it fine...

(i've used general purpose lithium grease (the black stuff) in a pinch too....)

Here's what Hitec says:

Q. What is servo grease?
Use only silicon based servo grease when replacing servo gears. Using other type of grease not intended for servo gears may produce a gas when used in sealed cases which may coat a nasty film on the motor brush that could stop the servos operation. Hitec recommends our product #58450, servo grease.

Tower sells the Hitec grease: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...XN741&P=7#tech

sounds fair....

wander if my servo's are flatulating while in use due to the gas build up.....

in regards to my above post... I am not saying lithium grease is what you SHOULD use... but it is what I use...

good info Piper

Cheers

I wasn't sure if lithium was best or not. I went out and searched some of the manufacturer's sites to see if they suggested something.

I always used cooking equipment grease. the gooey clear stuff. Actually more often then not I just take the grease from the old gear set set[8D] my 2 cents

RE: Futaba servo gear set replacement

:D Thank you Piper Chuck and everyone for your responses. I'm going to the same product that I use on the mountain and road bikes. It's a synthetic grease with teflon made by Finish Line. It looks and has the same consistency as the lube on the gear train.l It never dawned on me that petroleum based products could gasify in the servo. However, that makes a lot of sense.

Thanks everyone
Bert

However, to my mind what doesn't make sense is rebuilding a 3003 servo at all. In the UK these things cost £6! Six quid!!!!!. If they go wrong or you break a tooth I'd replace it with a new one, or better still get a bigger job. Recently bought a 3050 digital job for my nose wheel/rudder - its awesome...

If I am not mistaken and memory serves me (memory can sometimes be a problem )
White lithium grease is silicone based.

I have found that this Lube Gel from Radio Shack does an excellant job of providing lubrication for servo gears.

Hope this helps

RE: Futaba servo gear set replacement

Great question Checkmate 91! Why rebuild a $10.00 servo? I like the way you think. If I were living in Los Angeles or San Francisco I'd throw the old servo in the trash, go to the local hobby shop and buy a replacement, total time invested maybe 30 minutes. However, I live on the Central Coast of California. The nearest hobby shop of consequence is about a one hour drive. Total round trip say two hours and $15.00 worth of petrol. If I order the servo from say Tower Hobbies I pay a $8.00 shipping charge. A complete gear set costs $4.00, I purchased them sometime ago knowing that at some point the need would arise. Gear set change out time approximately 10 minutes or less if you have done it before. For me it's quicker and less of a bother once I know how to do it.
