Prop Size

My friend just got a Hobbistar select RTF. It didn't come with a prop. Recommended break-in prop for the OS .65LA is a 12x6. I have a spare 11x6. Would this allow the engine to over rev and / or not have enough pitch to properly fly the plane? We would just use it for initial flights and trimming out until we can get to the LHS. I sure don't want to start him out in the wrong direction.

I would not be afraid to use that prop on that motor as it is not a High performance engine. You will likely be running the engine good and rich for a little while so the reduced drag of the smaller prop might actually help you. Good luck and have fun.

I would get the right prop if it was me. I have the same plane and it has to be hauling a** to take off. I trained on mine and never changed from the 12x6 because the plane flew plenty fast enough without going to the 12x8 after break-in. This is an awful fast plane to start out as a first trainer IMO. Also, use a plastic Master air screw 12x6 and put rubber 3 1/4" wheels on this plane for a grass runway. Wood props won't last long on landings with a new flyer.LOL

edit
Also order an extra set of LG's for $7.00 from tower for the new flyer
Loc-tite the motor mount to firewall screws as they will fall out 1 by 1 no matter how tight they are.

Get the correct prop before running it.

RE: Prop Size

I think the 65 LA is comparable to the Thunder Tiger GP 61, which I have. I use a 13x4, but a 12x6 gives more speed. You will likely be very disappointed with the vertical performance of an 11x6 on this engine.
