I saw a styrofoam plane at my local club and wanted to know if annyone had plans to build one? The guy at the club said it was only $85 to get it off the ground.

Are you talking about a kit, or one that is built from plans where you cut your own parts from foam?

Most park flyers, these days, are made from some kind of foam.

You are going to be hard pressed to get one in the air for $85, especially one like you say he was flying. I have had about 30 foamies in just about every shape you can imagine. Granted you can build the airframes for almost nothing but it costs a bit more to outfit one..

Heres the breakdown

Airframe $30, if you coutout and build your own with blucor you can do it for real cheap, but it costs about $30 at Lowes for a pack of blucor foam.
Servos Hitec HS55's $20each need 3 or 4 depending on the design $80.. You might be able to get some cheaper servos, but its still going to be about $12 per servo.
Electronic speed controller like a castle creations Phoenix 25 $50
If you go with a brushed motor,, $5 but they last about 20 flights and you have to replace..
If you go brushless the motor will run you about $50
Lithium Polymer battery for brushless $40
NiMH battery for brushed $30
Misc carbon fiber, glue, tape maybe $15

Bottom line you can get a brushed setup in the air for about $180
A brushless setup will cost you about $350.

These are NOT beginner or even beginner/intermediate planes. They are quick and unforgiving and will break easily. These types of foamies are really for pilots with good solid fundamental flying skills and experience. That being said they are FUN and an excellent tool for learning to fly 3D. [8D]

Try this one for a decent price on all of the stuff needed to build an EXCELLENT foamie....it was my first foamie. These guys are the BEST!!! Their prices are really hard to beat as well.
