Have I missed something?
 

Don't really know if this is the correct forum to ask this, but here goes.

I have been flying R/C for a bit over 5 years now. I started with electric foamies and taught myself with, the expected crashes along the way. I flew electrics for about three years before getting involved with a club and moving into glow power. My first glow plane was a 45 sized mid wing aerobat ( Global Freestyle 3D) which I have since retired undamaged for sentimental reasons. I got bit by the performance bug and moved into speed planes and am also getting started in pattern.

One thing I haven't tried is a glow powered trainer. I have noticed a few experienced guys at the club bringing out trainers now and then just to relax with, and seem to enjoy it quite a bit. I was wondering if I have missed out on a bit of fun by not trying something like a Kadet or Telemaster along the way?

IMHO, No.

Perheps it's because I am flying 7 days a week right now, (I need the stick-time), but I do not miss my trainer. I have a Kadet Senior with a .91 on it and although it's quite easy to fly, I just don't enjoy flying it that much. Maybe I will later on, but I'm still new and really enjoying the ride.

If you have a Stick of any kind, you can relax with that...and it will do some faster stuff too. I know trainers will do a lot of stuff that many people don't use them for, but they do it ever so lazily...

For my first 10 years in the hobby, I would generally keep some kind of trainer-like plane in the fleet. Actually, now I have an Ercoupe and a T28, both fly much like a trainer.
When an experienced pilot goes back to a trainer, it is amazing just what they are capable of doing, especially spot landings and slow flight. We all like playing with the performance envelope of an airplane. The low end of the envelope is just as much fun as anything else. And, they make great float planes.

It's really fun taking a trainer and putting it through a set of precise maneuvers. I love taking a trainer up and putting it through the paces with all of the aerobatics that the "big boys" do!!! In fact, I think it's almost more fun to do them on a trainer because you really have to think about what you are doing to make the trainer do the maneuvers. Fun!!!! :D:D:D

Whether or not you're missing something is entirely up to you. Some pilots continue enjoying their trainers long after moving on to more challenging aircraft. Other pilots leave their trainers behind and never look back. If you don't feel like you're missing anything, then you're probably not. I enjoy taking my trainer out and flying it, but I have friends who have no interest in flying unless they're challenging themselves and practicing new skills.

I'm still relatively new ta this too, but I do think there is still fun to be had with a Trainer. It's a great beater/warm-up plane, & I still keep one ready to fly at all times. I would like to try the float plane thing one of these days with it. It's really nice to have when the wind gets up over 25mph & while I know I can still fly in it, I'd rather not risk a good plane in it anymore so out comes the ol'Trainer.:D

I have seen some good points made here.

Mark (agexpert), funny you should mention a Stick. I broke my Ultra Stick 40 out this weekend for the first time in several weeks. Had a blast with it, although the first landing with it I DID come in a bit hot.:D

I guess the easiest way to answer my question would be to bum a flight on someone's trainer. I just hate flying someone else's airplane.
