Applying decals

I asked this before and only got one response. So, here goes again. After applying decals on Monokote, how do you protect them from fuel? Clear nail polish has been suggested.

Mackey1,
I'm probably the one that recommended the nail polish. That's what I use on all my graphics to protect them. Once it's dry it's hard as nails, and it's next to impossible to see once it's dried.

You really should not have to do anything. However, I'm sure that the nail polish works very well as a protectant. I have had lots of vinyl decals on glow and gas planes and I have had more trouble with paint coming off than decals. You would have to leave fuel sitting on the plane to have a problem I would think.

RCKen:

I am getting ready to cover a "Contender" and it is my first full covering of a plane. I like the idea of the nail polish. Do you just apply a small amount on top on the seam going around the edges of the decal?

I have watched all of MinnFlyer videos, I even ordered a CD "secrets of Great Covering with Top Flite MonoKote."
Although, I will be using UltraCote, the CD had helpful hints that work for any covering.

I, also, have monitored your covering tips and pics.

Thank you and MinnFlyer and other greats who take the time to help us beginners.

RE: Applying decals

It depends on the graphic that I am covering. In this case where it's a full decal you can probably get away with just painting around the edge of the decal. Smaller decals or vinyl graphics I will paint the entire area with the nail polish.

RE: Applying decals

Thanks RCKen. I used to race R/C boats and we used 40% or 50% nitro. That stuff would take about anything off. We sprayed clear Imron over the paint to protect it. I just assumed that 15% nitro would lift decals. I'll go with the nail polish.
