Trainer speeds
 

I've ordered a 40 size trainer 63"WS w/.46 . I know it's a trainer but what are top speeds about before the wings rip off ? And about where do they stall? I'm just curious when I see it flyin I'll have a guesstamation of about my speed.

I would guess that top speed is somewhere around 50mph or so. Any faster and you lose stability and run the risk of flutter.

Stall speed is very low, you can slow a trainer WAAAAY down without much concern about stalling. I would say substantially less than 10 MPH. I would not fly one that slow if you are new though. You always want to keep just a little speed on them until you learn good throttle control.

I didn't say that. My mom's husband is a 1:1 flight instructor and also flies R/C's in the air and water.

Well it's not often that I disagree with Mr East, but today I'm going to. With just a few of Britbrat's simple mods to my NexStar with the original OS .46FXI engine it will now do approximately 70mph, and it does it in what seems to be a pretty stable manner. Now I must admit that I fluttered out the ailerons about 2 months after turning it into a bit of a hot-rod. I don't know that one thing had anything to do with the other or not because I've read other people in here with the same problem without any mods done to their NexStar. It would appear that when assembling the RTF versions they use no epoxy in the torque rod channels. I believe that my Tower Trainer runs right about the same speed in it's stock configuration with no problems what so ever.

I do agree with his stall speed assesment though. They seem to have no stall speed. As he said you can slow them down to a virtual crawl & they haven't fallen out of the sky on me yet.

By the way the only thing I have done to the NexStar,(engine wise) is to put a pipe like this one on it.

Then I stepped up to a 2 3/4 in spinner & an APC 11X6 prop. The OS .46 engine really seems to like this prop, spinner, & pipe combo!

I also took the dihedral out of the wing. I doubt that it had any bearing on the speed though, just made it more aerobatic.

LOL, I guess you have a point elenasgrumpy, I was thinking a flyable top speed, not critical mass. :D Plus, 50mph was a educated guess. I have never put a radar gun on one to clock and see how fast they really go.

In the 10 years that I've been in this hobby I've noticed one thing, us poor humans always seem to over estimate how fast our planes are flying. Everybody seems to do it. I know I've been guilty of it!! :D I had to learn the hard way. I had a plane that I was sure was flying 100-120 mph, I would have bet any amount of money it was flying that fast (or faster). When we finally got a radar gun on it the best I could ever get it up to was 94 mph!!! And that was coming out of a very steep dive!!!! Dang if that humble pie doesn't taste bad!!! ;)

Lol. Humble pie can be good for the digestive system occasionally. Mine too is an educated guess, but with some basis behind it.:D I have a friend who's plane has been clocked at 74mph with a radar gun, (or so he claims). My NexStar keeps up with it pretty well, he noses away from me but only after a good little bit, therefore I believe I'm getting 70 or very close to 70 out of it. God only knows for sure. 70MPH out of a trainer? It would be interesting to actually stand behind a radar gun and see.
