Ham TX options?
 

I'm shopping for a new radio and I'm looking for opinions on using the 50 mhz band. I have my license already. What radios are out there that do 50 mhz and are suitable for beginners? The new models I've seen are all computer radios towards the top of the line. Is used the best option for a 50 mhz tx under $250? I'm a beginner just learning with the Easy Star but I hope to have my SIG senior flying (with an instructor) within a month.

As far as I know you won't find any of the lower priced radios in the HAM band. Although I'm not 100% sure. Hopefully somebody with a bit more knowledge in this area can speak up and let us know.

I would recommend that you contact the dealer/LHS or mail order house of your choice and ask him to order a transmitter/system for you. Virtually all of the Futaba's are available in Ham channels (0-9) upon request and probably the other mfg too. It may take a little while to get it into stock but it can be done. Most places don't stock them because of the slow sale rate but it would be an easy way to make sure your channel is always open. :)

Make a few calls/emails and see what you can find out.
