NASTY STUFF !!!!!! HELP PLEASE
 

Hey ......

I have all this "nasty stuff" ....fuel....burnt and all over my OS45 engine. I have heard that if you put anit-freeze in a pan and heat
it.....then put the engine in it.....it will take all that stuff off. Any truth to this. Also heard a crock pot works well too.....but would
probably lose my happy home if I used that.

Or.....any other ideas ???????

The crock would work fine but it should NEVER be used again for food. A setting on low overnite will produce a like new look.

What mix of antifreeze or do you use it full strength?

Use it full strength. But DO NOT do this indoors. It needs to be done in a very well ventilated area, the fumes can be toxic.

I have used the "green stuff" for this job (I THINK it is Prestone), but any of the antifreeze solutions should work just as well.

Disassemble the engine as far as your abilities allow (minimum - remove carb, backplate and head), place in the crockpot, cover with antifreeze (full strength) and put on low overnite (or longer).

DO THIS OUTSIDE !!! The fumes ARE nasty.
DO NOT USE THIS CROCKPOT FOR FOOD AGAIN !!! The antifreeze gets into the pores of the crockpot and will poison any food cooked in it.

You MAY need a toothbrush to scrub some of of the stubborn spots (inbetween the cooling fins, muffler ).
The engine will come out looking like new.

Wash with soap and water, then rinse well in fresh water and put in a 200 degree oven for about 30 minutes to completely dry the parts. Lubricate the engine with after run oil and reassemble.

I just use simplegreen/denatured alcohol 50/50 spray it on set for 30 secs then use toothbrush. Great for the times you don't have time or don't wanna tear down the engine. I do this at the end of a fly day to keep the gunk off. A little PM goes a long way.;)

I bought my own crock pot at Goodwill for $3.00. This really works.

I also heard you don't have to dis-assemble the motor......true or false ?????

There is a paper gasket in the back plate and a ruber "O-ring" on the carb that could suffer and cause problems if you don't remove them. These motors are designed to be a sealed system with air going ito the carbs ventry and out the exhaust and are sensitive to air leaks causing poor performance.

It needs to be ethelene glycol antifreeze, the real thing, the environmentally friendly won't do nearly as well a job.

Keep the animals away from it as well, I found a crock pot at a garage sale for 3 or 4 bucks as well. Got some funny looks from the wife but not as bad as when I stuck a whole crank case in the kitchen oven to get the bearings out.

If you have the AF warmed up before putting the engine in it only takes about 1 hour to clean em up.


The Saito FA-45 took the plunge.. (totaly castor locked too)
the OS FS-40 has not been cleaned.

the muffler on my OS FS-60 was black before a 2 hour soak.. now it looks new again.
