retract sevo.
I'm going to buy the hanger 9 p51, pts. can I use a standard servo for the landing gear?

You need a retract servo. Besides having more torque, it also has 180 degrees of rotation so the gear will not load the servo at the ends of motion. Read the instructions on how to install and set up the linkage to the retracts.

You can, however it is not advisable. A retract servo will shut off at the end of each cycle where as a regular servo won't. This cut's down on the current draw and willl not drain your battery as fast. A retract servo also travels a full 180 degree's and has a little more horsepower than a regular servo. Good uck, Dave

just curious where are you buying a pts with retracts? Mine does not have them. I only have a flap servo to add. Did you install retracts? If so do you have pics and what retracts did you use. i would love to add retracts to mine.

It's not a good idea,stickwith aregular retract servo . You may need help on it at the field or something and guys are going to look at it like "what the heck is this?"
Retracts servos are not porportional like regular servos. They turn 180degrees each way and thats it. Most of my planes use mechanical retracts. I very "strongly urge and highly recommend" you use 4-40 rods on them. It will may a more stable operation where as the 2-56 rods bow out. Hook up one side and get it working well before you hook up the other side. Yu may notice whenyou first get them hook up and running, they may not fully exten or close. You can adjust this by moving the rod further out on the servo arm When the wheels are extended or retracted, the servos shouled be around the 10 and 4 oclick position or a 2 and 8 or similar there of. When set up right, they work just fine |

furnaceman called it right. If you are going to buy the P51 PTS as you stated, it does not have retracts. It comes with fixed landing gear & an optional flaps that you can either hook up a servo to & use it as a functioning flap system, ot you may choose just to set it at one of 2 fixed positions.
As nice as retracts are to have when working right, they seem to be the Aquiles Heel of every Warbird. Even the good ones. I just watched a set of $200 Robart Air Retracts fail today just like the mechanical ones that they had replaced. I see it every week at least once if not several times. |
