[:@] Where is the best place to buy replacement leads for my Hitec HS-300 servos. I am rebuilding my plane that has been mothballed for 16 years. Apparently a few vermin have had lunch on my behalf. Also is it hard to replace the entire lead or should i just splice into the wire?

It's really simple to splice into the wire.

It's not simple to open up the case and solder in there. But if you've got the skills, that is the best solution.

I'm not sure that replacement leads are sold anymore. A search should tell. If you can't find any, then any servo extension cord works when you cut off one end.

Just took a look at Tower's online catalog. Man, that thing is worth it's weight in gold. (How much does a couple megabytes of info passed through dialup weigh??? :D )

Yeah, there are replacement sets available. Cost about a dollar less than an extension that'd have a worthless connector.

BTW, the connectors' pins often corrode over time. If you use the old pieces, look carefully down in the connector at those pins.

Darock, I have several other servos, but the leads are in great shape. How would you clean the connectors if they have corrosion build up? There so small.

For the cost, I wouldn't even try.
Solder on the new leads, slide down and shrink some heat shrink over each individual wire

Liquid cleaners work. I used to have a bottle of stuff that was supposed to be applied with a Q-tip. I don't know if any liquid like that is still around.

I think someone mentioned awhile back that there is an anti-corrosion fluid available from electronics supply houses.

It's ironic that this topic popped up just now. Not long ago I found a bag of servos I've had stashed away ever since the RC frequencies changed and we had to upgrade all our TXs. I dumped the obsolete TXs and stuff in a garbage bag and quit the hobby. I couldn't see paying to get that many transmitters upgraded. Sold my planes and bought a couple of target rifles. (and then Clinton was elected..... jeez, can't get a break anywhere :D )

When I found that bag, first thing I did was look at all the connectors. Looked like new. Think the pins were all gold plated. No corrosion problem for sure.

Yeah Darock,

when i tried getting back in the hobby 10 years ago found out my futaba was uselessly too old and had to buy a new radio. That put me off even longer because times were tough (3 kids, 1 wife, 1 x-wife, 2 houses, and 3 job changes). Finally bought another radio but then something always happened and it just kept being put on the back burner. Hopefully now i can concentrate on it. Am trying to rebuild my trainer back up to specs, then will join one of the local clubs out here.

I love contact cleaner. It gives you the cleanest pitted unplated intermittant contacts anywhere. [:'(] Replace them now or after the crash.

Contact cleaner is OK if they are dirty, not corroded.

I will take a whole other approach.
What kind of shape is the servo itself in?
What kind of servo?
If it is a special expensive servo then repair it, if it is just a standard $12 servo maybe a better approach is to just buy a new one and keep the old one for spare parts.(why take the chance on a servo failing in flight and wrecking your beautiful plane?)

Didn't think about that. There just a standard Hitec HS-300. Just checked Hobbypeople website. Shows the HS-311s for $9.99. I'll defiantly just buy a couple to replace them.
