new engine wont start
 

ok so i just got in my new motor and i was going to try and break it in tonight but for some reason it wont start. im doing everything the book says but it still wont start could i please get some advice or help?

Check the glow plug... if it's good.. close then open the main needle about 3
turns... Make sure your getting fuel to the carb, and you have no air bubbles
in your line to the carb. and give her a try... Hopefully you have an electric
starter, some engines can be a bear to start.. If she starts, I usually use the
needle valve as my throttle... ie... I go wide open on the carb.. and adjust the
rpm's by opening the needle valve so as the proper RPM/rich for break-in..
Just follow your manual.... If all the above is good.. and it still does not start
insure the the carb. is fully seated on the engine and the fuel nipple is on there
good.. Hope this helps

Make sure your glow starter has enough voltage to light the plug. Give it a priming squirt of fuel into the carb. Run it gently through the compression stroke a few times without the glow starter to make sure it's not hydrolocked. It should at least fire and burn off this prime. What kind of engine is it?

Hold your finger over the muffler exhaust and turn over the engine a few times (WITHOUT THE GLOW IGNITOR ON THE GLOW PLUG) and watch for fuel to move up the line from the tank to the carb. If you see no fuel coming up the line to the carb, you may have the fuel lines switched.

It would be a big help if you could tell us exactly which engine you are talking about. Some like the Evolutuion engines are "supposed" to be factory run in and set. For most of the ones I have seen, the low speed needle valve is actually closed off complety and needs to be seriously adjusted to get the engine to run! You never mentioned if the engine is mounted on a plane?!? If you have never run an engine before I would suggest getting help from an experienced pilot. The throttle linkage should be checked first by someone with experience. IF you don't have the throttle linkage adjusted properly you won't be able to shut the engine down in a hurry if you need to and trying to stop the prop with your fingers will have seriously painful results! im terribly sorry iforgot the type motor. its an os 46 la i have it on my plane and a buddy of mine thats flys alot is helping me out but it still wont start. alomst got it this evening. but for some reason it just wont wont kick over. when i look at it looks like that it wont take fuel. the reason i say this is becuase there was an air bubble in the line and it never moved. now im no expert on thses engine but i am some what decent on regular engines an that tells me that its not takin fuel. now this could be becuase the engine itself acts as the fuel pump. im guessing here i would greatly apreciate any an all help here so i can become a pro at flying and then lend a hand when needed.

I have an OS32. Strange thing but setting the high speed needle to the recommended 2 turns open. It will not start (too rich I believe) If you open the throttle to full and turn it over with an electric starter (NO GLOW CONNECTED) with your finger blocking the carb inlet you should see the fuel been sucked in (and the air bubble in the line) If it doesnt id richen the hi and low speed needles.

As you say it seems fuel isn't getting to the engine.

Check the klunk is attached to the line that goes to the carb.

Try blowing into the line that goes from the muffler nipple to the tank (vent) and fuel should flow thorugh the other line to the engine.

Try putting a finger over the muffler outlet and turning the engine over (without the glo plug energized). Fuel should move through the line to the engine.

If fuel isn't getting there it definitely won't start, so look for why. Everything should be connected.

Check the glo plug out of the engine with the energizer connected and see if it glows. Try a second glo plug.

Fully close the needle and open it 2.5 - 3 turns.

If the glo is OK and fuel is getting through, energize the glo and hit it with the electric starter. It will run if all is OK.

Tune it as per the manual.

If it still doesn't run, then there may be a more complex problem with the engine, but these are simple engines, and fuel and glo should make it run.

Do you know an experienced modeler nearby on whom you could call for assistance?

I have had one of these engines for a few years and it's very reliable.

You can remove the HS needle and the fuel line from the carb and back flush by attaching your fuel filler line to the needle housing to see if there is nothing in your carb. Watch your eyes, fuel may shoot out the carb nipple.

almost every os engine i have fired up the first time from the factory started first time or at least popped a few times before it did.if you are sure the gloplug is good,i think someone said it here you might have the fuel lines crossed,what type of airplane is this engine in?it is possible the tank is installed to low,it should be center lined with the engine or even a little above.

If your doing this by the book, this must be your first engine. I suggest you see what these guys here say plus find somebody local to show you how all this stuff works

yea its my first i got it started today it was just the glow stick not charged all the way got home today after a few spins it cranked right up. now while it was running i could feel the fuel hitting me like form the exhaust is this normal? also i noticed that there was some fuel coming from the body of the exhaust and the end of it is this normal as well or should i do something about this?

They will blow out fuel, it needs to be sort of rich while breaking it in, just
follow the man..... Then keep it about two/ three clicks on the rich side after peak
Mine had a very small running range on the needle, But worked great!!
Your muffler boly may be loose, check it for tightness and all should be
good..... My La 46 ran great for me, even better after I removed the baffle...
I got many great flights on that my first engine on my Avistar, but then I
tried the 46FX... ended up giving the LA to a club member that needed
an engine...

The oil that is in the fuel is there to lubricate the engine and will flow through it and out the exhaust. It doesn't burn but will heat up as it travels through the engine and smoke when it exits the exhaust. If you don't see a smoke trail then it usually means that the engine is running too lean. On trainer planes this oil ends up on the bottom of the wings and on the tail surfaces. The dirty job after flying for the day is to wipe the oil off. Now find an Rc club and get out there and start flying (with an instructor of course!). [8D]

sorry its been so long since i checked out this thing but im in the navy and i was out on the boat for a bit. couldnt wait to get my plane started agian went and it fired right up but now i still have to wait i hit a bump while taxiing and the plane bounced and the prop hit the ground snap went to prop and being a sunday i do not think there is anyone open anywhere. have to wait till monday i reckon.

Don't use a wood prop right now. Get a Master airscrew ( I don't use those either) but they are more forgiving when you have a minor prop strike. Wood props shatter instantly

Also I would buy some spare props and take them with you to the field, I did this and the couple of times I have lost my prop I have been back flying in minutes. I also have some spare spinners as well.

well i got the spare props but forgot all about the spinners. i can always get those at a later time. i do havea question though. how long does the glow stick starter usaly last?
