Hi I've just moved to my first realplane , a Swallow 66" wingspan , my question is this , there are seperate servos on the wing ailerons , this allows me to control them individually , upto now I had them coupled but I would like to use them as flaps to slow the plane a little for landing , how far should the range of movement using them for flaps be? , and what channels do I use for the 2 alileron sevos? , i have a computer radio so how are the flaps turnedd on ? by a switch or by the pot on radio?

Usually one servo goes in the aileron channel and the other goes to an AUX channel. Then do everything on your radio. Usually it's a flapperon setting.

THX goinstraightup , how much travel down on the ailerons should i expect when i turn on the flap radio mixture?

Since you are on a computer radio you can dial in all you want. I would start with a little and experiment, then you can program your radio to your preference. May be start with 3/8 of an inch for now. Also if you check along the way, you will notice that you may want to program some up elevator in with your flaps as the nose tends to go down with flap application. Even the most basic computer radios usually have this capability. I have about 1 1/2" of flap on my Sudokhoi (see my avitar). That is too much. I need to tone it down. The plane slows to a crawl for landing without flaps.

the reason i want it is to allow me land at a less frantic pace , we use a fairly small landing strip and i am having problems slowing it down enuff for an exact landing , a couple of more questions GS , if u dont mind.
1 what other benefits does flaps have? ( outside slower landing speed)
2 can up flaps ( ie up 3/8 rather than down ) be used and if so does this benefit any manouvers?
3 what are the flaps controlled by on my radio , a switch? or the potentiometer twist button?

Hey Obi1,

I'm back. I was away for a little bit with the RCU crash and all.

I'm not a super radio guru. I have only experience with the basic JR systems. If I were you I would post a question on the radios forum (under airplanes on the RCU main page). Give your exact radio make and model and let the experts know exactly what you want to do.

People use flaps for lots of things. I haven't experimented a lot myself, but in aerobatics they are using them for super tight loops and that sort of thing.

I talked online to a guy named Craig with an Ultra Stick 60 once. He said he put his flaps on a three position switch to go up centered and down. He said that he used to roll inverted, put the flaps up and fly that way about 5 feet above the ground in circles. He said it was a hoot :D , but he almost put it in several times doing that :eek: .

On my Basic JR, my flaps are controlled with a two position switch. I noticed that the switch is easy to bump by accident when I hand release my Sudokhoi to go straight up. It was kind of scary for a few seconds because I wasn't expecting it.
