Impulse buying

I am terrible about buying things I don't need, Kind of why I am glad the best stocked LHS around me is fairly far out of the way.
Today I made a special trip to pick up a buddy chord and walked out with an E-Flight Cessna 182 along with a brushless motor and esc. Hey it was on sale, how could I resist. (I learned this from my wife  )
At least this time I actually did buy what I went there for to begin with (I have forgot to get the original item in the past and walked out with a bunch of other stuff)

Yes, I've done that before too....[sm=red_smile.gif]

It's a tell-tale sign of R/C addiction! [sm=shades_smile.gif]

I'd say about 99% of fellow hobbyist suffer from the same malady as you do!!! :D At least I know that I do.

My last trip to the LHS was to pick up a case of fuel. Of course when I got there I remembered that I needed 2 gallons of smoke fluid, a couple of new switches, the remote mounts for those switches, a couple of new props, about 6 feet of fuel tubing, and a new fuel tank. Hmm, that should do it. Oh hang on a sec, I also need a couple of new servos. You know how much I hate the standard servo arms so give me a couple sets of the Dubro servo arms. Oh yeah, I need to repair that plane so I'm going to need some balsa wood and a couple rolls of monokote. Hey, I see you still have that Sig Kobra kit up there. You know that Sig just discontinued it right?? So I guess that I should get it now while I still can, so put that in with my stuff. Ok, at the register now and I see the new Model Airplane News is there so of course I need to pick up a copy of that too!!!!!

Does this sound familiar to anybody else out there??? I figured it did!!!! :D

My name is Hogflyer, and I have to admit that I, to, am addicted to R/C.

Been there, done that at the hobby shop too many times to remember.

Just remember - the addiction ONLY GETS WORSE WITH TIME! Check out the 1/2A forum to see how bad it can get :D:D .

RE: Impulse buying

I walk into the local hobby shop and it's a little different for me. It begins at the magazine rack stood up right in front of the door so you have to climb over it to get in. I quickly look it over. Let's see, plastic planes, trains, RC cars/trucks, foam crap, Nope nothing here about real airplanes. Time to move on, so I climb over the display. I go all the way back into the back corner where the airplane stuff is hidden, I guess they're ashamed of it. I have a list of what I want but as usual there is no clerk offering to help find it. They're all up front drinking coffee and talking. So I root through the dis-organized poor selection of stuff they have scattered here and there around the corner. I find a few of the things I want on the first sweep so I go back to the starting point. It's been 30 minutes now, still no clerk. Not that he would know anything about airplane parts anyway. Root through the stuff again. Spin the displays and find a couple of more things finally. I've now found 8 of the 10 things on my list or a satisfactory substitute. Gotta take what you can get some days. [:@] I take my stuff up to the counter where the clerks were, they've now disappeared somewhere. Must need more coffee. I stand there for a while and one finally comes and asks if I found all I needed. I tell him the remaining 2 items I need and he looks at me like I just asked him to invent a nuclear bomb. He only knows trucks and how to sign his paycheck he says :D. I pay for my stuff and go home and order the rest of what I need from Tower. I at least had enough to keep my project going. This is a major RC hobby chain store and just about the only store left here in Memphis. And they wonder why mail order is taking their business?

hmmmmmmmmm sounds familiar......that "major chain" wouldn't happen to have USA in the name would it?

been there done that.....i know all too well what you're talking about.

now the pros and cons of that. i live in south of tupelo MS so for me that's around 95 miles or so which translates into around $40.00 in gas alone, so i said to heck with in and about 4 of us around here got into the "super savers" club (if you buy 3 orders in a year over $150 and save the shipping it pays for itself) and we're all the time ordering something or another for each other. i'll put an order in one week, someone else the next. works out great. now, remember that $40 in gas? guess what it goes to now!!!!!:)

I make a list of what I need, I then call the LHS to see if the things are in stock and how much. When I go in I take only enough to pay for what I need. This way I don't wind up in the dog house and I have some money left over for later.

Ok, here they are.
Arfs:
Seagull Decathlon
Kyosho Tiger moth (Got this for a REALLY good price)
Generic P-51 45 (Wanted a "beater" mustang)
Generic Matt Chapman 45 (And a "beater" aerobatic)
WM Aircombat Yak 25 (For when I crash my pseudo-zero)
WM Cub 26 (I like cubs, will get an OS FS-30)
WM Clipped Cub 46 (Blue & white, looks really nice)
WM Cap 232 46 (Also looks nice)

Yup, I like World Models ARFs!

Kits
HOB cheapass stick (thinking of using a K&B 3.5 on this)
Pilot dj-3 (.18 size ducted fan)
OK supra fly 25 (A classic)
Combat Gremlin (some day I'm going to do combat)
Hyper Bee (small and speedy)
Sig Colt (.15 foam wing, balsa fuse trainer, used to fly with the designer)
Sig Scamp (.15 foam wing, kinda like a Cub, was the first plane I flew)
Sig Kobra

I think that's all, but I may have missed a few. Don't even get me started on boats or engines!

My kit collection is a bit low right now. Over the last year or so I sold off 4 Marutakas (.15 size Little Half and F4 Phantom and .25 size P-51 and F4U), a GP Patriot, a Pilot Twin Ace, and a GP F-15. The Patriot and F-15 wouldn't have been sold, but friend in NC seemed to want them. The others I determined it was going to be a long time, if ever, that I built them, so I decided to let someone else store them. :)

And a final note to all. None of these are for sale. If and when I decide to sell something, it'll go in the RCU Buy & Sell section.

Ok, I guess it's my turn. Here goes.

ARF's
Well, none really. I don't buy many ARF's. I do have a World Models Super Chipmunk that I'm doing a review on, but it's in the process of being completed. I also have a Pacific Aeroworks Edge 540 40 size that I'm rebuilding the tail on.

Kits
Tower Trainer 40 - 1 ea.
Sig Wonder - 1 ea.
Lanier Shrike, .10 size - 1 ea.
Wing Mfg P-38 short kit, .40 size - 1 ea.
Great Planes RV-4 - 1 ea.
Sig Kobra - 1 ea.
Sig Hog Bipe - 1 ea.
Top Flight Cessna 182 - 2 ea
Top Flight T-34 Mentor -1 ea.
RCM Ultra Sport 60 short kits (laser cut) - 2 ea.
Great Planes Ultra Sport 60 - 4 ea.
Great Planes Ultra Sport 1000 - 2 ea
Great Planes Ultimate 40 - 1 ea. (started build)
Great Planes Extra 300 60 size - 1 ea. (started build)

I think that about wraps it up for the moment. And like Chuck, none are for sale. :D

RE: Impulse buying

Me to

Friday morning, I took a look at the want adds in the local paper. Wow, there was a NIB .60 Motor for sale. I look a little farther down the list, and hey, what's this a RC plane for $60. It's 7am and it think it's to early to call, so exactly at 8:15, I'm on the horn. The line is busy. I should have called at 7:00. After about 30 minutes of re-dialing, I got through. Turns out I was the first call. The guy had a couple kits also, and some other stuff. 45 minutes later and $600 later, I cleaned him out. Best I can tell, I shouldn't have to make a trip to the hobby shop for at least a week or so. I've got more balsa than most hobby shops now, four ready, with just a bit of work, to flys, two powered and two sail planes. I think the count was 12 kits, 14 motors, 8 of which were NIB. Hardware, about three boxes full, including motor mounts fuel tanks, wheels, you name it, all new. Fuel, two cases of 15%. and a couple odd ones, all sealed. Flight line stuff, actaull everything you need. Oh yes six Futaba radios, 5 of them are PCM, Enough servos for most of the kits and and and.

Yesterday, I cashed in my birthday gift from the wife, a 30 minute glider ride. What a hoot. I loved it. Even got to move the stick. When I got back to the car, I told her I though I might take lessons. She informed me that I couldn't start another hobby untill I got rid of some of the current ones, there wasn't room for anything else. I pointed out to her though that it was hard to bring the glider home. Maybe if we got a larger lot:eek:
