Hinges and gaps

How should I hinge the surfaces on my CGB chipmunk? I don't like the supplied hinges.

I've used monokote hinges before with good success.

I've also used CA hinges as well.

If I do go with CA hinges, what is a good way to seal the gaps on the surfaces?

Thanks a BUNCH!

Use the CA hinges and then follo with the Monkote hinge technique. You have the bset of both then... the sealed hinge with the CA hinge acting as rip-stops. and giving increased strength. This setup is great. :)

dave brown has a sealing film specially made for this purpose. transparent, easy to apply (with heat seal iron), and long lasting

I think 3M also came out with a really good product for sealing hinge gaps that hasn't failed me yet. I think they call it packing tape or something along those lines. :D It's cheap and you get enough for about half a trillion planes.

As far as ca hinges, well, I nearly totaled a new 4* this weekend due to failure.
I wont start another round here, but, its worth checking out in the kit building forum under, "No more ca hinges".

the gp ca hinges are better than sig. sig hinges tend to delaminate at the core layer. I've always discarded the hinges that come with sig kits

I wouldn't use ca hinges on anything bigger than 1/2a and I don't do 1/2a They delaminate [even gp hinges] and are not safe IMO. I think du-bro hinge points[the ones with steel pins] are the best. easiest to install and look like real hinges and are durable.

Something I'm starting to see a LOT off, especially repairing after a crash, and that's replacing balsa tail feathers with coroplast tail feathers. Some of the combat kits that are otherwise not plastic are also going to coro tails. JKAeroteck has gone to coro tail feathers and ailerons. Why? Because a perfet gap-less hinge is only a simple knife cut away. The cool part is the stuff is already colored and fuel proof.
