Alpha 40 RTF

Just put on a 10x7 wood prop on my Hanger 9 Alpha 40...WOW!!!! It gives it alot more zip. I bet the speed picked up at least 10mph, I can't get over how changing to a 2 bladed prop made that much more of a difference. The only thing is it lands a little quicker as well, so you have to give yourself a little more time to bleed off speed before setting it down.

Anyone else have experience with 2 bladed props on the Alpha 40 and noticed the difference???

I use an 11x5 APC, it slows down a little better.

Hey, just curious. You guys have any problems converting to a 2 blade prop. I did, couldn't get a plastic spinner to fit properly. Back plate on spinner kept on warping when i would tighten propnut. Gave up and put one of those small metal cones on in front of the prop. Kind of forget ,think i had to add a washer too. Use the motor all the time but have been lucky not to break a prop in ages. Crashed my alpha too many times. The evolution trainer motor ,11/7 prop pulls my slowppoke great.

I used world models 57mm plastic spinners on mine they work well. I changed to 2 bladed after my first flight, I can not say i noticed a speed difference.

I really like an 11x4 or 11x5 prop on the Alpha 40. It'll land as slow as it did with the 3 blade and pull WAY better all the rest of the way around. I found that with the flywheel on the Alpha trainer motors you have to trim the back of the plastic spinner backplate to sit flush and not warp.

Im tunrning an 10x6 APC prop biggest difference i can take off in about 300 feet and speed is much better. Only thing about switch props my high speed needed to be readjusted

Yes, I noticed a big difference going from the 3-bladed prop to the 2-bladed with my Alpha RTF; it flew with much more authority and my instructor liked it a lot better too. I tried both the 10x6 and 11x5 props and I liked the 11x5 better because it did slow down nicer for landing. When I put by 2-bladed spinner on, I also had a problem with the flywheel on the prop driver and the spinner not going together nicely. The solution I used was to just knock the flywheel off the prop driver. Doing this also eliminated the issue of snapping props when there was a prop strike with the ground.

Take the flywheel off. May not idle quite as low or as smoothly though.

I changed the Evolution out for a .61 4-stroke with a 12-6 prop. It's a lighter engine so I had to add weight to the nose and mounted the battery and weight in front of the tank. Now it sounds better and flys better, I had trouble with that Evolution after awhile. The 4 stroke works perfect.

you can take that flywheel off just use a socket that fits the silver part and tap it out your spinner will fit and your throttle response will be much better
don't loose the little key off the crank

300 feet ? my alpha and arrow took off in less the 75 feet are you just holding it down that long ?

I get pywackits Alpha off in about 50 - 60ft on turf (on a rough field with long grass), and less than 40 on asphalt. And that is with an engine that isn't running as well as it could at the moment - someone needs to fix a carb and it'll run great. ;) We fly it at half throttle and that is more than ample.

oops thatnks for picking that out i ment 30 feet but i dont suggest you pull to hard as you may stall it and well youknow have a very interesting tunch and go situation

I put 2 servos on my arrow wing and set it up with flaps It would jump off the ground

IF you don't want to mess with separating the prop driver and flywheel you can get the prop driver for the Evolution .46nt for less than 2 bucks.

So Hogflyer I need to fix that carb huh? I tried the hose over the needle but it didn't make any difference so I ordered another whole needle assembly for only $13! Thought it would be more but hopefully this will solve the problem. I also thought about changing the prop to a 11x8 since I still have the 12x6 on her. The 12x6 is the break in prop for that engine and I just haven't changed her since it works fine as far as I know.

hogflyer 10-03-2006 08:42 AM

RE: Alpha 40 RTF

pywackit,

We can try the 11 X 8, but probably won't gain anything except a little top end speed. I think we'll probably see a decrease in the take-off and climb performance and will end up back with the 12 X 6.

I hope that needle assembly solves the problem - that plane and engine makes for a nice combination.

Hogflyer, If I do fix the problem then you won't be able to deadstick her around all day....sure you want that? LOL!

RE: Alpha 40 RTF

I didn't remove anything, I just switched to an aluminum spinner. They are more money of course, but the fit is flush against the fly wheel...no warping or vibration at all. I have had several flights at not one problem yet. The spinner was about $25 CDN but is well worth. I had on a 2 bladed plastic spinner before but the darn thing kept warping no matter how tight everything was.

when i bought my alpha it came with the wroung prop it was 3 bladed but the spinner didnt fit so i just flew without one. Still flew great.
