LT-40 Shear Web Problems
I have just started construction of the left wing on the Sig LT-40.
I'm having a problem with the fit of the shear webs. They are too short to span from one rib to another. About 1/12" away from touching at each end. Would it be wise to add slivers of balsa in between the ends and the ribs to fill the gap? If not, what do I do? It seems that they have shrunk. Thanks for any help you can give. |
Shear Web fit
Shear webs don't need to contact the sides to do their job just so they are attached to the spar top and bottom. That being said I will add small pieces and fill the gap as it looks neater.

Ditto, except that I wouldn't fill the gaps. The wing is going to be covered so who is going to see it?

Looks like you are doing great! The pics remind me of building planes in my bedroom at my folks house some 25 years ago. Good memories- living with the dust after the sanding steps, sleeping to the smell of drying ambroid glue and aerogloss dope...
You picked an excellent plane to build- simple, forgiving and with very good instructions. Join the wings carefully- you will probably want to find a little more room for that step to make sure that you get it right. |

Thanks for the encouragement and tips everyone.
Build n Flyer, I'll be sure to find a nice big flat spot for that. May have to leave the rez to do so. You should see our floors, they feel uneven when walking on them. Sad part is, the building is only a year old. Here's some more pictures. http://www.lethbridgerocketry.com/wing-room2.JPG http://www.lethbridgerocketry.com/wing-unpinned.JPG |

Black, one thing that you may be able to do for more building area is go to a lumber yard and get yourself a hollow core door to lay on that bed.Just make sure it is straight and flat when you buy it. ;)

Black, I'm with you! I just finished putting th wings together, I think I'll take RC Outlaw's advice and balance it now. When it sits flat, the right wing sits at 4.25 inches, while the left wing is off the ground 3.5 inches, so i'll have to move it 3/8 to balance it out.
