Battery Charging
 

Dear All,

I have decided to move from petrol to electric, after flying petrol planes for a few years now. The appeal for electric however suddenly hit me.

I bought a Kyosho Yak-54 EPP 3D, and have just finished putting it all together. The battery I bought is a 3 Cell LiPo 1200 Mvh/3A. I bought the charger too which is digital and displays what you need to type in. What it does not say, and I hope I'm not being completely stupid, is how long I have to charge it for?? There are warnings everywhere not to Overcharge it, but nothing telling me how long to charge it for.

I've been looking online, but can't really find much on it. Though this was the best place to ask.

Any help or links would be greatly appreciated.

Chargers for lipos automatically stop charging when the voltage on the batteries reaches 4.2 volts per cell, you don't set a timer. Do not attempt to charge lipos with a charger designed for nimh or nicads. You absolutely must use a charger specifically made to charge lipos.

im not too keen on lipos, if you overuse them they blow up, if you over charge them they blow up, if you drop them they blow up its like using a can of nitroclycerine

and dont forget, these things are in some laptops! :O

But anyway, they automatically shut off when the lipo is charged, and your ESC (assuming it is made for lipos) will automatically shut off or send a warnning when your lipo is safely depleted, at that time cut the juice and get back down to terra firma :)

Respect, but don't fear lipos.

Invest in a very good charger or three that handle Lipo's and other types of batteries with adjustable parameters and built in safeguards.

Handled properly they are no more dangerous than that gallon container of flamable liquid called Nitro Fuel, you have sitting somewhere in your house.

And both of these are far less dangerous and explosive than gasoline.

Just be vigilant and take recommended precautions.

Just want to say thanks to everyone who replied. Really appreciate the time and effort you guys took to answer. Don't think enough people say "thanks", so that's what I'm doing.

I'm also terrified of leaving my battery at home now!! I may have to buy a bomb/fire proof container after seeing that link.

Most of us probably already have a couple of lipos in the house already, in our cell phones and digital cameras etc, so relax, they are quite safe if not abused.

Hi there all,

Can NiCd charger which charges both Tx and Rx be used for Nimh Cells? I read that Nicd should be charged around 16 hours, if the Nicd charger is being used in Nimh, then it would probably take 20 to 22 hours. But once again question arises, can a Nicd charger be used in Nimh batteries or not, if yes, for longer duration and how much. Pls clarify me,
