Is my crank bent????
The engine used to run excellent (OS 46FX). Now, for some reason if I can get the engine to crank at all with my starter, it'll go about 10 turns and the starter won't have enough juice to turn it. It will stop. I had to loctite the nut on to stop the starter from spinning it off. I'm really confused. I have no problem starting my other engines at all. HELP!!!!!!

More Info
Give a little history of the engine. Spank brand new, used, crashed etc. How are the bearings? What does it feel like when you remove the glow plug and turn it over slowly by hand? Something has changed and we need to find out what?

Is my crank bent????
It has about 20 flights on it. Bought it new about 2 months ago. Other than the odd bad landing, nothing serious for crash history. Bearings seem fine. It always needed a starter to get it going, could never do it by hand. I'll pull the plug out tonight and see if there's any differance.
Thanks for the help |
Is my crank bent????
it sounds like it ingested something and is between the piston/liner. I had a TT .40 on a scat cat that ingested the throttle barrel spring and got wedged in the piston/liner and it was difficult to turn. TT fixed it for free!

Is my crank bent????
46 FX, tough engine, hard to break. How Old? If it's been around a while, like maybe 6-8 years old, suspect a peeling cylinder liner. Some early production runs had a problem with the chrome lining peeing off, spalling the piston, cylinder and other fine fit parts.
Either send it to OS, or tear it down and have a look. Also look for a bent piston rod, if you tear it down and it looks ok, lay the rod on a flat surface, like a picture or the bathroom mirror. Make sure that the rod is straight and the crank and piston pin holes are parallel. This happens if you flood it and then crank like the devil with the starter. If your lucky you just tweaked the rod and you can either straighten it yourself, or buy a new one. It is a cheap part. If it's got a peeled liner, send it back to OS. Oh, if you tear it down, you'll void the warranty by the way, but if it is old enough to have the liner peel problem, then you are already out of warranty. |
Is my crank bent????
THanks for the replies people.
How long does OS usually take to get engines back to you. Its only 2 months old so Its definately under warranty..... Bob NJ The prop seems to grind a little in one spot on the rotation when in the normal upright position. I took out the glow plug and turned it upside down and it moved freely. Of course there was no compression but it seemed to me that everything was moving as it should. I have left it upside down to possible drain out any excess fuel and I'll give it another go tonight. |
Interesting
Tought to diagnose over the phone! Let me know how you make out with it_bob
