Hello new friends
Hello. I am new here and new to the hobby. I have been an airplane lover for many years now, and want to learn to fly models. I have read a lot on here, and I am overwhelmed by how much information is available to me. I won a radio in a raffle a few weeks ago, and I don't know where to go from here. I like the things I have read about the Sig Kadet ARF. I am still undecided as to what engine to put in it. Thanks to all in advance.

os .46 ax
cheers and welcome |
RE: Hello new friends
Welcome to RCU Lost,
The Sig Kadet (LT-40) is a great choice. Just about any 40 - 46 size engine will fly it well, but I would recommend getting a good ball-bearing 46 as it is an engine that you can use in many other planes later The OS 46AX is one of the best, but you can get a very good one for a lot less money. Two excellent choices would be a Thunder Tiger 46Pro and the Evolution 46. Both are around $80 Of course, if you look around, several clubs in your area may be having a swap meet where you can pick up a good one second-hand for much less |
RE: Hello new friends
What brand of radio and how many servo's did you win with it?
|
RE: Hello new friends
[sm=thumbup.gif] .46 AX. It's what I run my Avistar with. Rock solid engine.

RE: Hello new friends
It's the Futaba 14MZ and the 14ch. receiver that comes with it. It didn't come with any 'servers'

RE: Hello new friends
What would be good servos to buy for the Kadet?
|
RE: Hello new friends
What servos came with the radio you won?
And BTW, what brand/model is the radio? |
RE: Hello new friends
Hey Lostinthesauce,
Don't feel lost. I agree with MinnFlyer. And if you do not have a clue in flying just go to the flying site with somebody who knows to fly so you'll have more options in enjoying a second flight as well. Most of the beginner fellow modellers are having fatal loss of their bird in the first flight , so I recomend that you find some help on your local flying site. Cheers Johnnie |
RE: Hello new friends
Ah yes. I do plan to find help. I have a friend who has flown RC for some time now.

RE: Hello new friends
Hokey smoke, you won a $2200 dollar radio!!! Way to go!!! Yahoo!! :):)
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...p?&I=LXLHG9&P= But for a trainer all you really need is a good basic servo like Futaba's S3001 http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXH286&P=7 These are sturdy little devils that will work just fine and don't draw much current. You don't need fancy servos until you have moved up to "fancy" airplanes IMO. |
RE: Hello new friends
I was told that it is a pretty good radio, and that there are cheaper radios out there. I thought of selling it because I don't know what on earth I will do with 14 channels or what business a $2200 radio has going into a trainer. On the other hand, the color screen is pretty cool:)
|
RE: Hello new friends
Oh! I missed that!
Ok then, ditto on the S3001's Basically any cheap standard servo will do just fine (S3003 - S3004 these are about $12 each) |
RE: Hello new friends
If it were me, I'd sell it and get a $250 radio and spend the rest of the money on airframes and engines
|
RE: Hello new friends
I'd have a hard time telling you to trade down but you could trade it for several complete systems if you had the desire. ME? I'd keep it. :)

RE: Hello new friends
Oh, OK. Minn's right. If someone will give you fair value for the radio go ahead and trade it in on a Futaba 7C
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXGAF1**&P= and spend the rest on planes and engines and flight packs. It's going to be an extremely long time (years) before you will need the features of the 14MZ and even the 7C will have more than you need for the trainer but you will grow into it more quickly. See if your local LHS will take the radio and maybe give you a line of credit or something. You probably won the radio at a club raffle so see if you can find out where the radio came from and simply explain your situation to them. You may need to accept wholesale value, whatever that is. |
RE: Hello new friends
Welcome to this great hobby. If you're looking for a list of planes that are good for beginners, I've compiled a list of planes that will meet those needs. You can find that list here.

If you've been bitten by the same "bug" as the rest of us you're going to quickly justify spending that $2000 on all the equipment, hardware, and "stuff" that you're going to need in the hobby (my wife calls it an obsession ;)) This is a great hobby! Welcome aboard. -MA |

RE: Hello new friends
That 14MZ is no good. It won't fly a trainer.
I'll do you a favor and take it for you. ;) |
RE: Hello new friends
I second that thought LD

RE: Hello new friends
See what a bunch of helpful people we have here? :D
