2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
Hey Guys, I went to the store to buy some fuel for my 4 stroke engine and the store help told me that there is no difference between the Byron 2 stroke fuel and 4 stroke fuel. He said when he called to order the fuel that he asked for 4 stroke fuel and Byron said there is no difference at all. They told him most fuel manufactures just change the pigment and sticker on the jugs. Is this true or not?

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
I currently have a gallon jug that says "For 2 and 4 stroke engines" on it, so there may be something to it.
I cannot say for certain if the chemcial makeup is the same though... |
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
If an oil is labeled "4-stroke" it usually has a different oil or higher oil percentage.
I run 15% Omega or S&W in all my two and four strokes so I don't have to keep several different blends on hand. My rectangular metal fuel can is built right into my flight box and it's a pain to swap out all the time. I'm basically lazy. |
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
A good quality fuel can be used in either 2 strokes or 4 stroke engines. I use Cool Power 15% in all of my engines and don't have any problems at all.

I tend to agree with Charlie - he is lazy :D
NO, No, that's not what I meant to say:D most of the guys at my field use the same 15% fuel in all of their engines with no problems. We do have a couple of guys who like to run a little more nitro in their 4 strokes and also a tad more oil but they are the exception. |
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
I've looked at the charts for at least one major fuel source. The percentages for their 2 and 4 cycle fuels were exactly the same.

I also run cool power fuel and as long as there is 18% oil your fine for 2 and 4 stroke like stated before some like more oil and nitro, some of my club members add a little more castor to there mix, but as long as the fuel is within the specs for the engine your running your good to go.

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
YOu don't need to change fuel between 2 and 4 stroke engines. I have 2 and 4 stroke engines ranging from 36 size to 140's. I run them all on 10% nitro, 17% Coolpower and trhe balance Methanol. Works really well for me.

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
2 stroke blends usually have some castor blended into the mix where 4 stroke fuels are for the most part straight synthetic. i for one run straight synthetic in all my engines, 2 & 4 stroke.

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
Byron is a good fuel and I run it in both 2 and 4 strokes.

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
Sh thats true of some manufacturers but most of the time its the same fuel.
Morgans, aka Cool Power and Omega the 4 stroke and 2 stroke fuel, and even the 15 percent heli fuel are the same, when you go from the green to the red 20 percent heli fuel then they use a different oil package. |
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
Thanks Guys! Works for me then!
|
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
the only difference is color, run it
|
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
I run 15% Wildcat in everything I have, 2 storke, 4 stroke and helis and have never had a problem. Great all around fuel.

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
So can I use standard 10% fuel w/16-18% oil on my new 4 stroke FX 1.20 FS w/pump to break it in as well?
Thanks. |
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
REQUIRES: Fuel: 5%-15% nitromethane with 18% lubricant. Synthetic, castor, or a synthetic/castor blend may be used. NOTE: Certain four-cycle fuels cannot be used due to low oil content. However, SOME four-cycle fuels such as the Wildcat 4-Cycle 15% (CATP9109) may be used because it has 18% oil content. When choosing fuels for this engine, the modeler must be sure to select a fuel with at least a 18% lubricant content. Rod;) |

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
I have never used special 4-stroke fuel in my 4-stroke engines. In fact, I broke in my OS .26 with 10% nitro 24% oil ducted fan fuel. The engine ran surpisingly well with that fuel.
It's not like engines last forever when the oil content is 18.1% but the sky falls if the oil content is only 17.9 % In fact, determining how much oil is "enough" is a lot like determining the altitude where the atmospere ends and outer space begins. It doesn't just suddenly end like the water in the ocean, it just gets thinner and thinner as you go up and there is no well defined point where it ends. Hence, the differing opinions on oil content and type, and of course, they are all correct. How many glow engine log over 100 hours of use anyway? |
RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
Treat your engine to adequate oil and it will tick happily away for many years!
I always run my engines a tad on the rich side anyway. I'd rather run a little rich than peak it to the max and have it lean out in flight. If you don't run your engines lean, they will last a long time. Leans runs score the liners, pistons and rings. The damage accumulates over time. I'm sure people may disagree, but that's my opinion. RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
The owner's manual for engines specify what fuels can be used in their engines. I have found the fuel specifications for 2 and 4 stroke engines are such the same fuel is suitable for both engine types.

RE: 2 stroke and 4 stroke fuel?
Saito does recommend a fuel with 20% all synthetic oil. The synthetic oil helps keep carbon from building up on the exhaust valve, thus helping the valve from sticking. This article might help: [link]http://saito-engines.info/fuel.html[/link]
