Can a tube be added to exaust to point exaust gases downward without any ill effect?

Tower Hobbies sells these. They are great for diverting the exhaust in the direction you want it to go.

Hope this helps

RE: exaust

The answer to that is: "A definite Maybe"

There are exhaust deflectors on the market, and some people suffer no RPM loss, when using them while others do.

One time, I rigged up something for my son's trainer plane that was 1/2" thin-walled aluminum tubing that the smaller muffler exhaust (About 3/8" ) slid into with lots of room to spare. The tube was clamped to the side of the fuse and ran all the way back to the tail, yet it had no effect on the RPM, yet another time, I used a 3" commecial deflector and had a significant loss of RPM.

Tower also has

do a search under "deflector" for others.

Extended lengths can add excessive backpressure which will effect performance in a negative direction.

Edit to correct spelling of "deflector" as pointed out. :D I spell well, I type poor.

Bruce I edited my sarcastic joke realizing my bad taste;)
the deflectors work great I can not see where there could be a debate the opening in the tube is larger than the outlet for the exhaust pipe so causing any back flow restriction is pretty much imposable there only 1.5 " long I think that some people might have poorly tuned engines to begin with notice the open pipes on a car to increase airflow not restrict it
