nitro fuel 101
 

would like to learn more about the fuels and what is everyone running in the .46 range aviation engine's.

i run omega 10% and i'm having trouble keeping my evolution pts running 100%. also i've been running a 4cycle super plug in it which the lhs said was just fine according to horizon. i contacted evolution about this and they recomended the han3001 2 cycle plug. evolution recomends 10%-30% nitro in this engine.

i have spent alot of time tuning on this engine and i believe it's pretty close, just may be off on nitro content and or glow plug.

could someone please give there expiriences good and bad fuel they have expirimented with.

Craig, The fuel you're running should be fine. I would switch to the recommended Glow Plug.

But before you do any of that, check your low end needle. Several Evo's (Especially the PTS version) slipped out of the factory with impropper low-end needle adjustments.

Here's the proceedure:

Remove the blue collar from the low-end needle

Open the throttle barrel to 1 millimeter

Completely close the low-end needle - then open it 1 1/5 (One and one fifth) turns.

Replace the blue collar

Now you are in the right ball park. If, when you closed the needle, it closed a good amount more or less than 1 1/5 turns, that may have been the problem.

thanks for the reply Mike, i have reset the low speed needle w/o collar. it is now set to when the throtle is closed so is the low speed needle any more and it will flood or dead stick @ low-mid rpm range. the more i richen the low speed the sooner it will kill. it will perform great on the ground but in the air it will dead stick when throttle is @idle and a high trim which will run fine on ground. high speed is still within factory setting but leaned all the way.

I found that fuel with 10% nitro works well. Fuel with higher nitro levels than that makes the engines run hotter with out any real increase in power and the higher price is just wasting money. I tried some a couple of times and don't bother with anything but 10 % now. Whats also important is to make sure that the fuel has at least 18% oil content. Some fuels out there have only 12 or 16 % oil. Have no idea what these fuels are good for but the RC engines don't like it. [8D]

Set your idle mix to where Minn recommended as a starting point. Then set the high speed needle. Reduce the throttle and see how the idle mix is behaving via the "pinch test" and the "acceleration" tests. Re-adjust the idle mix if needed. Reset the high speed mix and begin test sequence again. It's a balancing act and can take a while to get right. Make sure the high speed needle isn't loose and spinning on it's own with the vibration as I have seen it happem.

thanks Bruce, i did pinch test and at high-mid speed it will kill, at idle the rpms will increase a lil then kill. at this point i will take all the advice and stick with the fuel and try the han3001 plug that's suppose to be in there.:D

the engine is not that far off, the plane fly's great in the air even at a low speed coming in though just before it kills i hear the engine clakin then dead stick. it takes off great, it just doesn't want to idle coming in for a landing like it idles on the ground.

another factor that can be preventing it from idleing is the possibility i flared the low speed seat upon and improper setting and closing the throttle at one time.

This could be the problem as well. The factor limiter on the High Speed needle may not be allowing you to lean the engine quite far enough. Take the limiter off the high speed needle as well to give your self some more room to adjust it.

Four stroke glow plugs are hotter than the two stroke plugs so they don't cool down excessively during the non-firing stroke. This hotter plug will cause your two stroke timing to be too early, and will affect your low speed reliability, and make your high end look too rich as well. Go with the factory recommendation. You might also try the OS #8 or the OS A3 (my personal preference for my 46 size motors).
