What is it?
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...52733018059762
Friend of mine sent me this video,as a total noob to the RC world i was wondering what kind of plane is this guy flying? and where can i get one? Thanks for any info.. |
RE: What is it?
There are a ton of these foamies on the markey. take a look at the Flat outs from Great Planes (tower hobbies) or the super zoom from Hobby Lobby

RE: What is it?
Jambo, just keep in mind that you are watching a video of one OUTSTANDING flier. Don't think that you can buy one of those planes and do that kind of stuff too

RE: What is it?
I'm sure this guy is one of the best and it would probably take a lot of time to get even half as good as him..As a first impression the sport looks relatively inexpensive and can probably be done in a back yard. And as i am about to retire i will have plenty of time on my hands..

RE: What is it?
ORIGINAL: jambo101 As a first impression the sport looks relatively inexpensive and can probably be done in a back yard. Oh, and BTW, I believe the plane in that video has over $500 invested in it total... (Thrust vectoring, outrunner motor, ESC, great radio, etc...) |
RE: What is it?
By understatement i presume you are referring to inexpensive? or can be flown in a moderately sized back yard?If that plane in the video is around $500 then some form of trainer should be in the $150-$200 range which is definitely affordable and as for back yard i have a large lot.The appealing feature of these foamies for me is the electric power as i assume its quiet, those noisey gas engined planes never really turned me on,as for clubs and i've been in several for different hobbies and always found them to be a bit snobby and cliqueish, however i will give our local club a try as it seems they have an indoor flyin every Tuesday evening at a local gymn..
Any recommendations on an indestructible trainer aircraft? |
RE: What is it?
another one that wants to run before he can walk: Jambo get with that local club, find an instructor, talk with him about what he'd like to teach you on, learn from him then practice practice practice i can't tell you the number of people that come to the field watch us fly and think it's easy it looks easy cause of the praticed skill involved.
It''s a great hobby . just approach it correctly good luck |
RE: What is it?
By understatement, I meant both expense and flying area. Flying with a club gives you the advantage of free instruction, AMA insurance, and frequency-regulated airspace. You also meet great people and get ideas for future projects, and help with your current ones.
If you want an electric trainer, I think this is your best bet - it's a great plane. Without instruction (or a simulator), expect a 5% chance of success. With instruction from your club, expect a 95% chance of success. Please look into that club and join the AMA!! -Mike |
RE: What is it?
Jambo101,
This is a great hobby. BUT...you will not be able to fly any reasonable plane in your back yard for a long time yet. The foamies are a good way to start, but it's far better for you to get started with an AMA club, a glow plane and an instructor. I fly 3D foam for fun at local parks, but it takes HOURS of stick-time before you can keep them safely under control. For foam, get a Charger CR-1 from http://www.temeculavalleyhobbies.com and have an EXPERIENCED instructor help you learn to fly it on LOW RATES. (That plane is the easiest to build on the market which makes the loss less dramatic when you put it in....and you will, we all do). For Glow, get a Trainer and find a local club for instruction. You will lose interest without experienced help....and you will lose money too. A good flier can make this look easy. It's not. Your brain needs to be trained, just like any other skill. Almost anyone can learn, it just can't be rushed. Welcome and ENJOY!! |
