Looking for a second plane
I want to know how good these planes rate as second planes:
Great Planes 1/3 Scale Pitts (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXAVP9&P=7) Hanger 9 Sukoi (http://horizon.hobbyshopnow.com/prod...an1275&tag=dpp) Hanger 9 Ultra Stick 60 (http://horizon.hobbyshopnow.com/prod...350&pc=HAN2350) I want to get into scale aerobatics. Also, if the Sukoi listed is no good, could you recommend something else? (ie CAP, edge, etc) I might add that although I only have mastered the trainer, i have a LOT of experience on Real Flight G2 flying every type and landing every type of plane on there. And doing it successfully. However, a sim is no substitute for the real thing, I know. |

I also like scale war planes, specifically anything from worldwar two and the triplanes from WW1, like the Red Baron's plane I think is cool. Are those any good for second planes?

2nd plane
How about a Sig 4 star 60. It can be a real
confidence booster and can do aerobatics. The planes you listed will dollar up pretty fast, making them VERY expensive for a second plane. Don't take a real big step from your trainer. Just moving to a low wing can be a big step in recognition of attitude. Instead of having 3 or 4 seconds to make a decision when you're in trouble, you will only have 1 or 2 seconds at best to keep it out of the dirt. Of the planes you listed, only The Stick would bea good recommendation for a 2nd plane. Also look into the Sig 4* and GP Easy Sport.

Although I wouldn't recommend moving into the high dollar giant scale stuff for a second plane, an aerobatic plane is a fine second plane...depending on how you are flying the trainer. If your trainer has a flat bottomed wing I would go with the stick, if it symmetrical or semi-symetrical, a 60 size midwing aerobat is nice. My second plane was an extra 230. |

Of the three I recommend the US 60. That plane can be gentle in the beginning and will keep you on your toes when you want it to. I fly the US 60 with all the bells and whistles and love it! I would wait on the giant scale stuff after you've got a handle on the smaller aerobats. Good luck!

I would like to get the stick and put flaps on it. I would also like to stick a Saito on it, but they may get expensive, so we'll see how it goes.

The Goldberg Falcon (they are back at Tower) is a great intermiate trainer. You can start to learn acrobatics with it. I flew one for years with OS 40. Must have put 5 gallons of fuel threw it. Great for fun flys. My buddy ran it out of fuel and landed on a free way and it got run over. The engine survived and I still fly it today.

i suggest for a second plane sig 4 stare
a 40 was my first endeavor at building. it build's easy. and fly's grate it sore's very good.a bit quick on the aileron's.but i do not have a radio with duel rate's yet |

I would suggest the sig mid star 40, or 4 star forty, they are both excellent second planes, and with a little kit bashing can be made to look like a stand way off scale extra 300 or 300L. cheers |

my forstare 40 is my frist tail drgger and im haveing grate fun wih it,it perty tuff.maydone flite it snap rolled on take off aboute 20ft high and went nose it full throtle and broke the fusaloge in halp.that's when i learnd not to installe a used servo in the aleron's i rebuilt it and she is flaying grate.and im abote to master the tail drigger and enjoying learing them as thy will be my choice from now on. also the for sig 4 star in a low wing vershoin of the sig somethen extra mid wig.i have on the work bench now. just finnish covering.it's my second kit.and will be my first mid wing.it will be ready for the summer season. it give's me a hanger of for flyable plane's and a brad new hitec eclipse 7.programmable. i retired in nov 02 i have been soloing for three mounthe's and have a new flying season to look forward to. cant get any better then that.if I can keepem out of the dirt. happy flting rich galv- tx |

I recomend staying away from four strokes for your 2nd plane. Maybe even your 20th.
I've had a few saitos but i have found that i am happier with the good two strokes. Fewer dead sticks, lower cost, far less vulnerable to crash damage. It is hard to get a saito to idle less than 3000 RPM without adding glow driver. They sound more realistic, but are a real pain. |

IMO the Ultra stick is the ideal 2nd plane. I have around 9 planes now and the ultra stick is still my favorite. It doesn't matter what else goes to the field with me the Ultra stick is always there. Just make sure you set up the control throws at a very low rate until you get used to it. I always have a "veteran" fly my planes first to make sure there are no surprises.

Besides the 4*'s there are other alternatives:
A. GP Easy Sport (Suggested before) B. WM Super Sports 40 (My recommendation for the price and capabilites), also you can start with a nos gear and then switch to tail dragger. C. Ace Cloud dancer 40 or 60, very light and nimble do not overpower it :D (I put a Irvine .53 and it screams ;)) a 40 to 46 would do nicely Also, they look IMHO like a plane not as a...... bunch o' Sticks....(Flaming gear ON ).... Hey dudes.. it's a joke!!!! |

hard landing
from experienced. stay a way from the hanger 9 ultra stink's ARF. for three reason's one thy are hot glued assy. second thy are plastic covering three thy have a built in wing instances defect. i won a 40 size at a fly in raffle it flew so badely it took three experienced Friend's to figure out y the plane flew so badly. after assembly it was perfectly balanced in all aspect's the plane would not lift off smoothly in take off. it would get to a point of up evaluator and jump straight up.and in flight would wash out at up evaluator in any thing slower then full throttle. it took a 3/32 shim under the front of the maine wing after a incidence check was done. i hope this has not turned in to a addiction. happy flying |

You're the first person I have EVER hear say the Ultra Sticks don't fly well. Is Ultracote plastic? Because that's what they are covered with. I think the consensus is that Ultracote is one of the finest coverings. I won't speculate what was wrong with your US 40 but the ones at my field fly perfectly, mine included. I'm sorry you didn't have the same experience. |

i don't come here to disagree with folk's..because if some one say's the sun's up some will say it's not.
there probably logical reason. arf Kit was donated free to our rc club by a HS shop near us for the fly in.and was probly one of the first arf kit's produced.and not selling.sitting on the shelf.i still have the box. i use it to store scrap balsa in.on the box it say's durable plastic covering.not mono coat mono coat dose not refer to there covering as plastic. hanger 9 may have made some drastic improvement's after the first production.one being poor wing insadence.as this one did.i surely hope so.mine fly's fine now after a bunch of meticulous re engineering. :rolleyes: I'm glade you and your fellow flyer's's are having good success with them. happy flying. |
