Fuel jug material,Same as soap Jug?
 

Hi Gang,
I was drilling holes in the cap of an empty fabric softener jug to use as a fuel container.
Now i'm asking myself if this kind of plastic is OK for storing fuel.
Has anyone used these containers for fuel?

.I just looked and milk,dish detergent,fabric softener and even the jug the fuel comes in have that LOGO but i'm tring to figure out if the material is the same because i'm buying a 55 gallon drum of fuel and some locals want to buy some from me and they have soap jugs but never used them for any type of fuel :confused:

I use a mineral spirits (paint thinner) jug. Washed out well, and dried. It's not clear, it's flat, which allowed me to box in that end of my flightbox for tool storage. ;)

I think the soap jug will work but the cap is to then and I can't tighten the fittings so I guess i'll have to shim up the inside with some gasket material.
Still beats sending TH $22.95 :D

i've been buying it by the drum for the last 10 yrs and sell it to the guys at the field only way to get it at a resonable price.(i've been selling it for $12.00 a gal.) the only jugs i know for certain that won't give you a problem are windshield washer jugs. all so if you don't have the red plugs that seal them your fuel is takeing a chance of absorbing moisture and losing nitro content,i usealy go thru about 3 drums a yr(just got one in last week)also when you get the drum if your not ready to empty it don't break the seal igot it down now where i can empty a drum in about 2 hrs or less have all your jugs
clean and ready to go when you start.

I have 2 washer jugs here and they don't have the recycle logo on them so I guess they were made from fresh (REAL) materials.

if you have a hard time finding any redmax will sell you the jugs with the red plugs the last time i checked they were $ 1.25 a piece .i get the guys to return the empties at the field when they're thru with them never can have too many once in awhile
you get one thats been reused so much it'll get a leak so you have to trow it out main thing is to keep the plugs they're hard to get with out buying them by the hunderds you might check with the salvage yards our vp of the club works for a large one and he's been able to get me some all jugs are not the same size plugs you'll probly find the13x the most popular but i have some that are 12x and 14x what kinda pump are you going to try to use to get the fuel out with?

Laundry Detergent Jugs are made of HDPE(High Density Poly Ethylene), the same stuff as fuel jugs. However, it is a heavier material and it is opaque, so it will protect your fuel from ultraviolet rays, and it is less gas permeable, meaning that using a laundry detergent jug will prevent the Nitro in your fuel from off gassing through the walls of the jug.

Also, the pour spout in the laundry jug is a press fit. Once you pull it out, the lid will snug down tighter and make an airtight fit.

I use red, blue, yellow and white detergent jugs for 25% (1/2a fuel), 10%, 5% and FAI fuel respectively. The 50 oz bottles are perfect for sport flying with 40 sized planes because they limit how much fuel you drag out to the field and expose to the dust and changing temperature and humidity.

For the big birds, sometimes it's nice to have the capacity of the 200 oz size detergent bottle.

Only a suggestion,

Maybe check with Fuelman of RCU, He may be able to help find a good source of jugs and seal caps. Or even sell or trade some.
