Flaps or flaperons?
 

I have the Hangar 9 Ultra Stick that I recently built ... and now need to replace the wing ... long story, stupid beginner mistake. I’m trying to decide if I should build the wing with flaps and 1/2 span ailerons or full span ailerons without flaps? I have the Futaba 7C radio and I’ve learned that it’s not capable of mixing the flaps and ailerons to give me full span ailerons along with flaps and airbrakes, etc ... I’d like fast roll rates and I think I’d get better roll rates with the full span ailerons. So, as I see it I have three choices (two different building choices)

1) Build with full span ailerons and mix in flaperons.
2) Build with flaps and 1/2 span Ailerons and “Y” the flaps with the ailerons (the flap/aileron option has wider flaps and ailerons).
3) Build with flaps and ailerons and program flaps and ailerons along with air-brakes ... the way I had originally built it.

Will I have higher roll rates and a better overall plane with full span ailerons? Do I really need flaps? Do flaperons really work?

You don't need flaps. The whole purpose for flaps is to increase the lift on approach to slow the plane down. I've never seen a Stick that wouldn't already fly slow.

What Brad said is true. But just for the record, Flaps with half ailerons is much better than Flapperons

I agree with MikeB.

Flaps add another dimension to this wonderful sport/hobby. I have planes equipped with and without flaps and I really do enjoy deploying the flaps and landing oh so slowly. Sure, none of my planes really need flaps, but I sure have a lot fun with them.

My p-51 mustang has flaps but i never used them so i dont think you need that much.

I have planes with both flaps and flaperons. I also have one with only ailerons, no flaps. To tell you the truth, those with flaperons, well, I have never really seen the changes in approaches with them. However, the ones with flaps and ailerons.. well, deploying the flaps makes one big difference in the way the plane performs. But for that application, as some have already said, you don't need flaps.

If aerobatics is your primary objective, then go full span ailerons.

Yes flaperons work but on most planes with large flight controls you can get the plane to loop so tight it will snap out so there's really no point
I have a magic 3d and use a touch of spoileron to kill the lift making it much nicer to land in the wind, and since it has a flat bottom wing it makes it much better inverted too
just experiment with it that's what makes the hobby fun trying new stuff that's haw a started using spoilers on the magic I dicided to see what it would do and now the plane is even more fun to fly
