.46 FX on Avistar
 

I have an Avistar with an OS .40LA on it and I have an OS .46 FX coming in the mail. I was going to put this engine on the avistar and then build a new plane for the .40LA. Can I damage the avistar with the .46FX? Is it too much power? I just don't want to snap the wings in half in mid-flight if at all possible. Waddyou guys think?

I fly mine pretty hard. It's got a 46 and a tuned pipe on it. Never had any trouble.

There is no problem with the .46.....great match for the plane..I have the Tower Trainer .40 with a .60 on it,no problems at all..so i wouldnt be worried :D

It's a perfect combo. Only thing is you'll need more lead on your tail. Try shifting the batt pack to the tail, or use a bigger capacity pack rather than dead lead weight.

The 46 is perfect for it.

I had an Irvine 53 on mine. I was a blast for several months,
untill the day i put softer rubber bands on it than i usually do! :eek: The wing lifted off the saddle, and snaped. lawn-darted in from 300 feet. Not much left.

I'm building another, this one will have a GMS 47 (My beloved Irvine 53 is dead.) Also going to make some sort of hook that interlocks the wing to the forward former so the wing can never lift off the saddle again. Also thinking about putting a little piece of fiberglass on top and bottom of the wing joint.

You can controll the speed by using low pitch props. you end up with more pull but less top speed. try the APC 11.5x4 you'l like it.

You can reduce weight in front by 3 Ounces by switching from the Hangar 9 aluminum mount to a Hayes Plastic mount. Its a littel more work, but worth it.

The engine will work well. I ran a TT 46 Pro (Which is a compareble engine) on mine with great success. I agree with Rajul that you will probably need to move some weight back to the tail because the plane will be nose heavy. Don't worry about it being too much power. It will be perfect.

The .46 will work great. You'll love it. CG might change a bit, so make sure to re-check the balance both front to rear and side to side.
Make sure that your Avistar wings and tail feathers have a good epoxy bond.

It makes the plane a hot flyer. IF you have experience then it will work well. If you want to use it for a trainer then the 40 is a better choice until you get used to it. A buddy tried using a Avistar with a 46 in it and its just too high performance for him to get used to.

46fx is not fast if you lower the throttle and use 11x5 prop. trim the plane out at a lower speed.

I used my 53 powered Avistar to train beginners. They put the throttle at 1/2 and it just crawls along like it had a 36 on it. why waste money on an engine you will outgrow?

I gave my old 40 away last week.

The 46 will be fine but DON'T put a 60 on it like the one member said... He has probable been flying a while... A 60 can cause a torqe roll and take off's and landings... Good Luck!

The 40LA is enough engine for this plane. If you're going to spend the bucks on a 46, why not put it on a better platform? Like an Aresti for learning pattern or a Sig SE for wild aerobatics. I've run a few gallons of fuel through my Avistar (hey that takes a while - those 40LA's don't use much fuel!) and haven't had the urge to put a hotter engine on it. It's much too limiting to really learn aerobatics on.

No, really. Just put together a better aerobatic platform. If you like fun-flying, I'd highly recommend the Morris Hobbies Morris the Knife. What a boatload of fun those planes are! Check out the threads in the fun fly forum. They're very easy to fly on low rates. They can fly so slow you think they'll just fall out of the sky. Great 3D trainers. www.morrishobbies.com

PS: If you get the ARF, take your time installing the servo rails. It takes some patience.
