Flight box battery and charger
Hi guys,
Just wondered is it possible / alright to charge a [link=http://www.alshobbies.com/shop/lookupstock.php?pc=4781&Desc=]12v Lead Acid[/link] such as the one in the flight box with a [link=http://www.alshobbies.com/shop/lookupstock.php?pc=3533&Desc=]Pro Peak 2500VP[/link] or do I need to buy a specific charger for it?? Cheers |
RE: Flight box battery and charger
As far as I know, any source that will total 13.6 vdc will charge a lead acid battery. ( a typical 12 volt lead acid battery when fully charged will equal 13.6 vdc). And you will need a current source that will deminish as you approach 13.6 vdc. I used a Radio Shack Battery Eliminator to charge a lead acid battery.. worked just fine. I don't know if Radio Shack is in the UK.. don't remember from my travels.

Cheers for that never seen a Radio Shack here there is a Maplins.
The things is that I already have one of the pro peak chargers and didn't wanna waste money buying another charger if I didn't have too. |

SYC:
From what I read on the specs on the Pro Peak 2500VP, it is mainly for NiCd and NiMH batteries, and has a specific cut off voltage for the typical RC battery (4.8 to 9.6). It does not show an output for 12vdc batteries. You will need something to output 13.6 vdc for the lead acid battery. Same for a gel-cell. If you can go to a car parts store, pick up a cheap car battery charger that plugs into your mains system (wall plug). Best of luck with that project. DS. |

I purchased a [link=http://batterytender.com/default.php?cPath=11&osCsid=e4052b27b15ce35266cd16 79b8c532cc]Deltran Battery Tender[/link] and simply keep it hooked up to the flight box all the time. The Battery Tender (I use the Jr. version) is designed to maintain a car or motocycle lead acid or gel cell 12v battery in classic car or motocycles which don't get used during winter months.
It is truly a plug and forget system and cost me about $25. A properly maintained (fully charged) 12v battery will last much longer as well. |
