RE: Pilatus PC9
Thanks RC Ken. I must apologize for my comments. I guess I was getting fed up with the negativity and the insults that seemed to be getting more attention than the subject matter of the post.
Sort of our of character for me to do that, but, as I said, I just about had enough of all that non-productive input. Now back to the posting. I have an OS 46 and an OS 50. Both swing the 12-7 very nicely, RPM around 12000, burning S&W 15%. It did a fine job pulling my Venus 40 around until I managed to crunch it in on take-off (another story). It was quite fast and, although not quite unlimited vertical, it managed to get through the Sportsman Pattern routine just nicely. I replaced the Venus 40 with a larger Venus II and the OS 1.20 AX turning a 15-10 prop. I intend to use the OS 50 on a new Sig Something Extra that I ordered yesterday (kit form.. need a winter project other than electric ARF's). By the way, I use APC props pretty much exclusively. Reason? Well, the LHS keeps a good stock of them in all sizes so that's what I opt for and seem to get great service out of them. Dale, I don't know about over there, but here in the states, the APC's cost from about 3 to 6 dollars US, depending on size. So, it's easy to keep a stock of them on hand at the field. I have several different sizes to play with and sometimes, that's just what I do.. change props, fly, evaluate, change props, fly.. and so on. Then I seem to always end up with the first prop I had on in the first place.. :D DS. |
RE: Pilatus PC9
I picked up my APC 11x6 for my 46 AX for AUD$7. I also have master air screws and they are about the same price. Of course if you go for a bigger prop they are slightly more expensive and a smaller prop will be slightly less expensive.

RE: Pilatus PC9
The cost structure is basically the same here. The APC's we've bought here seldom need balancing.. or rather upon checking the balance, they normally are just about perfect. I only have one Master Air screw prop but have never used it.
I'm sort of surprised that you Aussie's don't use the Bolly props, which I believe are made in Austrailia. We use them here, usually the carbon composite props, which are very strong and don't flex like most of the others. They give very good performance. DS |
RE: Pilatus PC9
Never balanced a prop, never had to, never had a problem on APCs or Master Airscrews. I could use a Bolly prop if i wanted but its hard to get them in the smaller sizes and they cost a lot more and i don't really give a crap about getting every single last gram of thrust out of my engine/prop.

RE: Pilatus PC9
Yeah, they are a tad bit expensive is probably why I stick to APC. Breaking a Bolly can put a dent in the budget.
