Engine Cleaner Basics

Got to ask the perpetual question that has hounded me for years. Just what is the best cleaning method for glow engines. I have serveral really nice engines that have over time gotten that glow fuel look. Has anyone ever found the best method of cleaning the brown stains off of an aluminum engine case. I have tried vertually every over the counted mixture known to man but have never found anything that really works. There must be some old timers out there that knows the best home brew mixtue.

The best I have found is to put the engine in an old crock pot and cover it with Prestone AntiFreez. Heat it on high for 24 hours. Comes out clean as a wistle. I remove the carburator.

Get yourself a crock pot. Pour in some anti freeze, put the engine in it and cook it on low overnight. Rinse it well and lube it up with some after run oil or a mixture of air tool oil and Dexron III auto transmission fluid. It work well. It's best to cook it in the garage or outside due to the fumes from the anti freeze. Don't EVER use the crock pot for food after the anti freeze. Try it.

A guy at our club uses Dawn Power Dissolver. Spray on, wait a few minutes, wipe off.

Don't need a crock pot, antifreeze, don't have to take the engine apart. no fumes, etc.

Carb/Choke cleaner works well also.

Another use for Dawn Power Dissolver: I just used it to clean the gunk out of really old Dubro fuel tanks. If I can I will attach before and after pics. If not, just try it. Rinse well with hot water after letting the Dawn work for awhile.
