ok my sister and brother both live in appartments they are 22, and 24, when i move out i will probably be in an appartment, i have about 8 planes where will i store them.

Edit: how many others also live in apartments?

That's not a weird question at all. Where to store models is a problem a lot of us have--I think I'd have more planes if I had more space. Then again, as I've still got three kits I've been "working" on since around 2000 unfinished, maybe I wouldn't have more planes! :)

If you move into a two bedroom apartment without a laundry room, things get tough. Particularly if you have a roommate. You might just have to keep one plane. If you've got wall space, run adjustable shelf rails (the real term isn't coming to mind) up and stick posts to them, allowing you to make the most of the available space.

Another alternative is to rent a small storage room at a well-kept storage facility. That's not an ideal option, but it's one many people pursue, not necessarily for RC but for anything. It's somewhat costly, but if you don't have much space it allows you to keep the things you don't have space for.

Not weird at all, I have the same problem, I live in a small 1 bed apartment (about 660SqFt) I have several ways of maximizing the space, I think I could easily fit upto about 20 planes in the apartment (if a little cramped).

When I rented the apartment, I was looking for large living spaces and small none living spaces. What I mean is the front room and bedroom are a large size but the kitchen, dining area and bathroom etc are small. Don't have a dining table or if you do have a very small one in the corner, use the dining area as storage. My dining area is a desk and workbench all on a very nice table (well it was when I got it). I currently have 5 working planes and have just obtained 2 more kits, I have a stand in my bedroom build of 1/2" PVC plumbing tube that holds 4 of the planes, I am going to update the stand to hold the 5 and so on. I should be able to get this stand to hold about 8 or maybe even 10 planes.

When you have a place try to imagine your furnature (try for as little as posible) and stuff and then think of where you can put it all, take a note book and a tape measure and get the dimentions of each room and each bit of funture make scale paper representation of everything and try each combination until you find something that works, I keep doing this in my head, it is not as good, but it does work.

Also limit the size of the planes don't buy 5 1/4 scale planes as this won't work.

The hardest part is not having a good workshop for good shop tools.

I am very interested in what others in the same situation have done.

I spend $55 per month on a garage. I would agree that quality workspace is more of an issue than simple storage. Fuselages and wings stack up reasonably well if you're dealing with .40-sized trainers and sport planes. It also helps that I'm married to a wonderfully patient woman who doesn't mind (too much) that I'm using our coffee table in the middle of our living room to build kits.

Needless to say, we don't have guests over very often! [:P]

Make a rack type thing all you need are 2 bars a couple of feet apart, if feasable you could have it at one end of a room from one wall to the other as high up as it can be, that should be enouph for all or most of them.

8 planes is not many it won't be long before you will need 2 racks or 3 racks or 4......

I am single and live in a small 2 bed room trailer with a storage shed and my total square footage (trailer and shed) is about the same as JPGale's. In the shed (9 x 15 x 8' high ceiling) I have 4 or 5 planes (56" to 68" ws) stored in the rafters, one 50" Marblehead Class model sailboat, a .40 powered out rigger racing boat, half a dozen kits and lots of other stuff (mine and my son's who has moved out). In the bigger bedroom (11.5 x 8.5) is the shop with a 30" x 5' bench (with band saw, drill press etc - the dirty side), a 2' x 80" bench (building area or clean side), plus a large wardrobe and 1.5 Beds stored on end, shelving (cheap steel bolt together on a wheeled base) and three more planes (36" to 40", 2 on the ceiling, one on the end of the bench) with 2 on the bench (a pair of 62" RCM Ugly Sticks, one wing at a time), 2 gun cabinets and reloading gear, plus 2 more planes in the small (my) bed room (39"-52" on the ceiling)with a twin bed for me. That plus two sailboats (Sunfish) on trailers and my table saw outside. The kitchen has my drafting table (no dining table),the living room a love seat size couch/hide a bed, TV Cabinet/Books shelves, computer desk. I also have a washer/dryer and a bathroom. It can be done, you have to be creative in figuring out how to do things like storing, building and just living in tight quarters. Oh yeah, 2 cats that love to help me build.

A really good way to store your planes in tight spaces in on a free standing plane rack. It would be more permanent to have real shelf storage, but in an apartment you can't just go putting holes in the wall (I think). I built mine using 2 inch pvc. It can hold 2 40size models, and up to 3 wings. It could be built taller to hold more planes if you wanted. It only takes up about 8 sq ft.

I've got a friend who has one of his hanging from the ceiling in his bedroom (don't get started guys [X(] ....I haven't seen it firsthand!!!)
Just a thought, but it does combine the hobby with "art".

that's what i was gonna suggest (not that i have seen any of my friends bedrooms either) but i hang mine from the ceiling in the garage. a couple small hooks screded into a stud for peace of mind and then just loop some wire or string or whatever else you chose. i hang the fuselage and then the wing below it in the same hooks. takes no usable space up that way. well that is unless you have really low ceilings or are 7' tall.

I'm thinking about getting a big wooden bella prop to hang on my wall. I think they look damn good but its pretty expensive.

Here's one that I'm going to cut off just behind the canopy and mount "flying into the wall" in my 2 story livingroom. I already have an antique control line plane anchored to the wall as "art". Plus the 20/10 Zinger prop over the door going out to my 1 car "hanger".

Bev. : I have a plane that a friend built as a gift hanging in our guest bedroom, it flew twice then I hung it up as art. I also have the back half of a plane sticking out of the side of our house. Gets a lot of comments.

As far as storage goes, you will be surprised what you can do if you really think about it !!! We lived in a 399 sq ft 5th wheel for 13 years and at one time I had 9 planes and 3 kits in it., another time I had 2 1/4 scale planes and 5 smaller ones (40 size ).

It sure is nice to have a bit more room now and not have to have them in the living quarters. ENJOY !!! RED

I considered hanging planes from the celing, especially in the living room where I have a vaulted ceiling. I figure that since they're airplanes, if they're higher than me and have any fluids in them theyu're gonna drip on my head. Just for some motivation, here's before and after pics of my airplane room.... same number of planes and stuff, just creatively stuffed.
