Joining a club
 

I just email a guy about a club that's on my way home from work. I asked for details on joining and if I could come by one evening and have a look around. I told him I was interested in get some instruction to learn to fly my new plane. Hopefully I'll hear something today. I believe I could do it on my own but there are other things such as proper engine tuning, flight control rigging and trimming and the like that I would rather have someone show me instead of experimenting with it on my own.
I believe I could fly it now if everything was just right...I just don't want to take off and realize my flight controls aren't trimmed right, the engine isn't tuned right and dies or a multitude of other things that could go wrong on first flight. I don't have enough experience to recover quickly and get it back on the ground safely to fix it.

We'll see what happens.

Really a smart move. An instructor on the buddy box only has to save you from one serious crash to recover any and all costs associated with joining the club. And it sounds very convenient. You'll be able to stop and fly EVERY night this summer on the way home from work. Your wife will love that.[:@] Also, bunch of new flying buddies.

I guess they don't have a website. None was listed on the flyer I had. Only telephone numbers and email addresses.

Glad to hear you are joining a club. You will meet a great bunch of people and learn more in one day watching others with their planes than you could ever learn on this site. I tried to go it on my own at first and failed. No good flying site, and no one to help me out. It is a lot better flying with other people too. I soloed on my second flight but I'm still learning so much from the experienced fliers, and it is nice to have someone nearby to help should I need it.

Bruce, the club name is Singing River Radio Control and it's in Hurley, Mississippi. It says they have 16 memebers, 4 instructors and the flying field name is SRRC Field. I still have not heard anything in response to my email.

The guy is probably at the Super Bowl. Well, he COULD be.:D No phone number or directions to the field. If you have directions or can get them, just show up some weekend and look around. Small clubs are fun but informal about answering email at times (that's why they're small).

It's a worthwhile thing to do. You'll find a good social outlet of like minded fliers. I like to hang out at our field for the jawin as much as the flyin. Clubs, like any organization, come in all varieties. Some very businesslike, others very loose. Hopefully you'll find a sub-club within the group that you can buddy up with. Always nice to have other folks around when you fly. Safety being not the least consideration.

I actually work at Northrop right next door to the Trent Lott airport shown on the map...it's not a far drive to the club. I'll probably drop by and check it out one day this week.
