Basic Questions

Well, I am in need of a field box, anyone have any good suggestions as far as an all inclusive kit?

I am concerned about the post-build finish of the balsa prior to covering. I sanded the whole thing with 180 paper, but I am concerned that the ultracote will bubble if there is the slightes undulations in the wood, is this true?

Not to worry about the finish. The only person that will notice an irregularity is YOU. You will be the biggest critic. And, it won't make it fly any better. Unless you are competing in masters scale competition it doesn't matter. Enjoy!!

Once smooth to your satisfaction, it is important to get all the sanding dust off. Wiping it off only serves to grind small dust particals into the wood grain...the best dust removing method prior to covering is the good old vaccume cleaner!

As for a field box...here is one of MANY threads on the subject!

Have you ever seen what a TF wood pecker does to a 180 sand job. no bubbles and you do not see the holes.

Field Box

I just bought a large plastic tool box from Wallmart for $10.00 and modified it to suit. Being plastic makes it fuel proof so I mounted a large fuel tank in the bottom so I don't need to drag a gallon fuel jug all over. I did cut outs in the front for the power panel, and volt meter. There are small compartments in the top under the first lid that I use to hold spare glow plugs, ect. Makes it hard to beat for the price. :D

Fastsky - Don't forget to provide some vent holes in the compartment with the fuel (maybe even a fan). Vapors can build up,and make an incredibly volitile situation (a small spark can ignite it), since the methanol burns in such a light shade of blue that it is practically invisible. There have been a few cases of fliers being burnt when their flight box exploded!
