Wheels for Nexstar
I started flying last fall, I have a Nexstar and a Goldberg Piper Cub. I've decided to switch flying fields, the one I flew at last fall was at a sod farm, and had a fabric mat for a runway grass was short, however it is 45 miutes away. I did find a new one about 15 minutes away, stoped by and talked to the members last december. The field is only open on wedenesdays and saturdays. This field is right behind a farm site and the grass is not as short as the sod farm, and appears to be a little more uneven. what size wheels should I jump up to help with takeoff and landings?
Thanks for your help PS the cub has a O.S. Max FP 60, 76 in wing span |
RE: Wheels for Nexstar
One of the clubs that I fly at has a less-than-manicured grass field that is bumpy and uneven. I've found that 3" wheels usually give the kind of off-road taxing performance that I need to get my planes up and down there.

RE: Wheels for Nexstar
I fly from a grass field that is maintained by our County Parks department. The grass length varies from week to week. I generally use 2 1/2 to 3" and have no problems.

RE: Wheels for Nexstar
Does anyone know if a can put a 3 inch wheel up front on the nexstar? I'm not sure if it will interfer with the prop
Thanks again |
RE: Wheels for Nexstar
The front wheel sits behind the propeller arc, and a 3" wheel won't change that. Interestingly enough, adding larger wheels will tend to provide more prop clearance as the plane will sit higher off the ground.

RE: Wheels for Nexstar
My Nexstar handles a very bumpy grass runway with the originaly equipped wheels. My plane looks like a monster truck driving through a junk yard on taxi, take off and landing but it handles it. See the link below for what my feild is like:D

RE: Wheels for Nexstar
We use 3" wheels as the norm for our grass field. In some cases the front wheel is 1/4" smaller than the main wheels. In that case we use 2 3/4" for the front wheel and 3" wheels for the mains. They are large enough that when my Seafury hit a gopher hole with one wheel, it just bounced a bit on that side and kept going!! :D
