Recommend my 2nd Plane, Please
 

Guys,
I just started flying about 2 months ago, and I'm flying the heck out of the trainer and I'm ready to move on. It only took me 3 visits to the flying field to solo, take off, land, the whole nine yards. I learn pretty quickly.
I have flown a friends World Models P-47 Thunderbolt, but I've never attempted to take off or land, due to it not being my plane.
My question is this, What plane would you guys recommend next? I am stumped because I don't want one of those low wing trainers that I know I can already fly just fine. Ultimately I want to get into warbirds and build a World Models Spitfire. What would you guys do? Thanks.

CG Tiger 60 kit or ARF. Nice, big, flies like a *****cat until you turn it loose! Put a hot .60 to a .75 on it or a .90 to 1.00 4 stroke and have a ball. If you want .40 size then Tiger II, Advance 40, WM Super Sports 40. I would say stick with trike gear for now. The Tiger 60 allows for you to go to a tail dragger later on.

What exactly is a CG Tiger 60? Where can I see a pic? Does Tower Hobbies carry this plane? ARF or Kit?

P.S. I will soon have an OS FX .61 to use.

Carl Goldberg makes the kit and ARF of the Tiger 60. A .61 FX is a good choice for this plane. Spend about $30 for a Mac's Muffler and use an APC 12X6 prop. Great combo for pattern practice. Omni Models had it with free shipping. But check your lhs first, maybe they have one. I bought mine from my lhs, had to wait 2 weeks because his initial stock sold right out!

You will love it, and probably won't outgrow it. Available in ARF or kit.

Guys,
I have been looking at the Sig Something Extra and LOVE the looks of the plane, but I want a 60 size plane, so I can buy an OS FX .61 and use it for a long time from plane to plane.
Is there a model out there like the Somehting Extra that is 60 sized? I would buy it if was a .60 size!

Too bad Sig doesn't make a 60 size version of the SE.
there are a few 60 sized planes, but I don't think there is realy an equivalent to the SE.

The Ultrastick 60 might do nicely

Might be a good idea to consider a 90 for it. most 40 sized planes fly better with a 46 - 50 on board. most 60 size planes are a blast with a 90. Supertiger 90 is a popular choice. if it is too much for you at first, simply keep the throtle down.

I would definitely recommend the SIG Somethin' Extra or SIG Mid Star if you want to build it, or the Ultra Stick of you want an ARF.

I agree with Mr. Cutler I have both and just finished the Se the Mid Star 40 is still my favorite. It was what I trained with very good airplane, very predicitble.

Sig 4 star 60 Kit builds very easy and is a very good flyer, when you build only put 1/2 the diehedral the wing, and if you think you might like to fly with float's later add a support for rear mount for the float's while it is easy to do, plane would fly well with the 61 2 stoke, I fly mine with a YS91, and love (it unlimited vertical) these planes fly well in calm weather or windy condition's, are pretty aerobatic, (but not 3D) Also the horizon 60 stick is a good choice.

I and many others put a Saito .72 in the SE. That is a great engine for this plane and many others. You could put a .60 engine in the SE without a problem and many have done it but most .60 engines are too heavy. the Saito .72 is only a little heavier than a .46 so it works well.

I highly recommend the KNIFE ARF by morris hobbies, it flys slow and will make you a better pilot. You can set it up to fly like a trainer and if you have dual rates it'll do anything you ask of it.

I have a SIG SE with a Saito 72, and am currently building another, with, guess what? A Saito 72!

The latest one is going to have a larger rudder and elevator.

One more thought about the Mid Star . . It's a great model to learn basic aerobatics BUT watch out for the fact that it spins about 1.5 turns more when you release the sticks.

I had the beating heart to prove it!

I highly recommend the World Models Super Sports 40. I flew a Hanger 9 Alpha trainer for about 6 months or so and moved on to this at the recommendation of several people. If you can land a trainer consistently you'll be able to land the SS 40 with no sweat. I have dual rate throws set on my JR 662 which allows me to switch between 65% (or whatever I set it to) and 100% or more if I choose. At 65% it flys a lot like a trainer but is still a little more responsive. At 100 + % it is a blast ! ! I highly recommend it if you are comfortable w/the trainer.

A little more feedback:
I started with an Avistar Trainer with a OS46FX, then for my second plane I put together a 4*60 ARF and powered it with an OS91 Surpass. Boy do I love to fly this plane. However, I just finished my Ultra Stick 60 last week using an OS61FX. Still waiting for the WX to clear up so I don't know how it flies. Everyone I talked to has recommended them as a second plane. OH and I have a Something Extra Kit ready to go on the bench to build. I would certainly choose any one of these three. Except I would recommend a little more power for the 4*60.

For an update:

I just flew a buddies Somethin Extra for a full two days last week. It flies great, and I love the aerobatics of this plane.
I think I might buy one.
I'm really into warbirds though. I just finished building a World Models Spitfire and it's ready to roar. I have some warbird experience, but I still might crash it!!!
We shall see.
