ways to attach a canopy?
Hey guys. I'm finishing up my 4* build, and I'm trying to find a good clean way to attach my canopy. I dont plan on ever having to remove it, so I'm open to anything! thanks

RE: ways to attach a canopy?
I cut 1/2" strips of covering and use the strips to attach the canopy to the fuse.
- Tack on side of a strip to the lengh of the canopy and then locate and tack as needed to the fuse. (Repeat for other side) - Now apply the iron and repeat in sections for the front and top. This way, if the pilot should ever get loose (has happened to me ) you can cut the covering and reglue that sucker back in [>:] |
RE: ways to attach a canopy?
I use a similar method to Kevlar, except I substitute 1/4-inch vinyl trim tape for the iron-on covering. This is very easy to remove should the need ever arise, while at the same time being very secure. Here is a pic of My Reactor with the canopy attached in this manner.

RE: ways to attach a canopy?
I usually just use screws but it's nice to have a tape trim around it to keep air and oil stuff out. I never glue them on anymore. Reason being is that the glue usually makes more of a mess than I would like and if you want to take it off it can take off the monokote too.

I like that voltwatch being out in the open there. Nice setup.

I prefer RCKen's recommended method of screws with fuel tubing.
The same technique works very well with cowls and prevents cracks and other vibration related damage. |

ORIGINAL: Pete1burn I like that voltwatch being out in the open there. Nice setup. Thanks Pete. It just seemed like a reasonable place to put it. :) |

No one has mentioned it so I will.
RC-56 Canopy Glue. 1. Cut your canopy to fit. 2. Put a bead of the glue on the mating surface of the canopy. 3. Put in position and TAPE in place. 4. Clean any glue that seaped out with water and paper towels. 5. Come back the next day and remove the tape. RC-56 will glue just about anything to anything else. It dries clear and can be cleaned with water and paper towels WHILE IT IS STILL WET, Fuel will not affect it (at least in my experience). To remove the canopy use a NEW #11 blade and CAREFULLY slide the blade between the canopy and the covering and cut the canopy off. |
