Motor mount made too small?
 

Hey, does it make sense that the motor mount on my Seagull Boomerang is too small for my motor even though it's rate for a .46 engine? I would have though that seeing as the .46 from OS is pretty much the standard(or one of them) they'd make the mount wide enough for it if they say the plane can support .46. Maybe i'm doing something wrong. I tried squeezing it in but it just won't fit or go down completely flush with the mounts on the engine to the mounting

I had the same problem with the mount in my Seagull Spacewalker II.
I got out my dremel and bevelled the top inside edges until my engine would set down fully.(I was mounting a TT Pro .46 in it)

Well it's for a Seagull in my case as well. The boomerang. Wonder why they made it like that. I'm a little concerned that it might loose strength if I start trimming it down. Do you think it will hold fine? I just talked to a friend who has a mount at home for a .46. We might stick that in there but I'm worried about trying to align it all when the current mount is already in there and well positioned. It would be a whole lot of work for nothing if I could just shave the sides a little. Maybe using an x-acto knife or something as well. Will have to see.

Was your mount the teflon type(possibly blue if it's like mine)?

Without a picture to go by, I assume that the mount is a two piece that bolts to the firewall. When both pieces are mounted to the firewall the arms are too narrow for your engine to fit in between, correct?
If that is the case, you can elongate the predrilled mounting holes on both mounts in order to spread them out.

Mine was red teflon material.
Don't widen the whole arm. Just shave a 45 degree chamfer on the top inside edge to fit the contour of your engine.
I have about 40 flights on mine after the mod with no problem.
sowega flyer, the mount is one piece with no predrilled holes (or at least mine was)

Simply remove a little bit of material from the inside of each arm until you can get the engine to fit down into the mount. Try to take the same amount from each arm as you remove material.

There are a number of 46's on the market. Case widths vary somewhat and the plane can also be assembled with a smaller engine. If they put in a wider mount and you wanted to use a smaller engine then you would be saying "It's too big". Sorry, NOT a one size fits all without a bit of work. You'll run into this type of thing just about every time you build.

Yeah been having to do a lot of the compensate and adjust thing with the servos(had to shave some wood for them to fit in properly but ok I'll try and shave on each side just as soon as I can get with my buddies. I'm sure one of them must have a dremel.

If a dremel is not available, you can do the job with a sanding block or a file. It just takes a little longer.

Got a question... I got a dremel from someone and I shaved off the sides a little of the mount. Now it fits all the way down flush(the mount aread on the engine to the mount) but it's still a little snug. Should I shave more or just leave it? Just wondering if it's good or bad for vibration if the casing is touching the mount throughout. It's not snug too a point where it's trying to open the mount more or anything like that... It's just perfectly fit and snug now.

If you are not having to force the engine in then it's OK. When bolted down it'll become one mass anyway and there should be no relative vibrations.

Exactly what bruce said. You want the engine to slip in without moving the arms of the mount any. If it does move the arms any it will put some odd stresses on the mount. Odd stresses like that can cause the mount break in flight. Just to be sure it wouldn't hurt to have maybe a 1/16" of clearence, "just to be sure".
