Some questions from a beginner
Hello,
Just started flying this past weekend. I've got a Super Cub and have already been out several times with it (one time without crashing :) ). Naturally, i've got a couple questions. 1. Is it ok to fly without a cowl? Mine was damaged pretty bad, and unfortunately there seems to be a shortage of them for my particular plane. 2. It looks like the engine is mounted on crooked, but it looks like it was meant to be like that. Looking at it from the top it's offcenter to the left, but it's angled to the right. I just want to make sure this is normal. 3. I read online that the wall mounted battery charger does not fully charge the battery, and that the DC charger will? If this is true, is there a wall mounted charger that will fully charge the battery? So far I really enjoy flying. Fortunately there are a several places I can fly within 10-15 minutes of where I live. The SuperCub seems to be an excellent beginner plane, and so far has proven to be very durable. |
RE: Some questions from a beginner
1. flying without a cowl is OK.
2. that's normal. the engine is normally pointed right a couple of degrees. 3. a wall mounted charger will totally charge the battery. it may take 10 hours if it is fully discharged |

May be normal for your plane. many planes require "right thrust" to offset engine torquing/P-factor. Engine offset so prop can come out of center of cowling while being angled. 3. Don't know. Need to know more. Who made this plane? |
RE: Some questions from a beginner
yes it's ok to fly without a cowel, especialy when you maiden a new aircraft, the engine should be turned to the right a little, and can be off centered a bit. as for the charger i have never heared of that befor.
Welcome to the hobby and i hope you have fun with that cub:D, dave trimmer. Edit: you two beat me to it!:D:D |
RE: Some questions from a beginner
Everyone has answered your question but I want to add one word of caution just to be safe.
If you fly without the cowl make sure to double check your center of gravity just in case the absense of the cowls weight up front moved it back too far. (not knowing your particular aircraft, some cowls are heavy enough to throw things off when not installed) |
RE: Some questions from a beginner
Thanks everyone for the help! I really appreciate it.
I have a HobbyZone Super Cub. The cowl is very light, so I don't think not having it will affect the weight of the plane. I asked the question about the charger because on the HobbyZone website, there is a note next to the battery that says "Cannot be fully charged by Wall Charger HBZ2519.". I'm not exactly sure if that's the charger I have, but I though I would ask anyway. Thanks again! |
