Painting Cowl
After painting my cowl for my TF Arrow I masked off half to paint some strips. I used regular masking tape and it left a residue that I tried to get off with dematured alcohol. Didn't work. Messed up the paint. I sanded and had to repaint again. This time I masked it off with painters tape, it is supposed to pull clean. It didn't. What can I use without messing up the paint again.

RE: Painting Cowl
It sounds like your base coat is not sticking or has not cured long enough. Did you scratch the cowl with fine sandpaper to add some tooth? I use green painters tape and remove it by pulling back on itself at a very flat angle. What kind of paint?

RE: Painting Cowl
Go to an auto parts store and ask for 3M blue striping tape

RE: Painting Cowl
I used Hangar 9 spray paint and I use tape that says it will pull clean. I did ruff the paint before painting. When I went to wipe off the glue from the tape the first time it basically smeared the paint. It was like the alcohol was eating the paint. I let the original paint dry for about a week before taping it off for the repaint.

What Minn said. It's a plastic or vinyl tape. Very low tack strength.
Might try baking orig paint at a very low temp, like under a lightbulb. Could also practice on something else similar. |
RE: Painting Cowl
That is the type of tape that I used. I guess I should have purchased name brand.

RE: Painting Cowl
Use Automotive painting tape, works much, much better. The 3M stuff works really well.

RE: Painting Cowl
Find a supplier that sells to auto painters. Go to a painter if needed and ask where they get their GOOD supplies. A CUSTOM/HOT ROD paint shop would be even better, like Chip Foose.:D
