Well this almost old man (58) is coming back again to have fun... Started with reed tx in 59. Haven't flown R/C since 95. (Had an ArcoMaster for years) Looking for suggestions of a trainer to start out with again (for the 5th time).

Have various engines, would prefer .29-.35 to start.; Have Futaba 8 Chan PCM

Scratch, Kit or ARF all ok, not scared of bench work.

Would like to go through Aerobatics (no snap maneuvers)

Hey Dunk welcome back.

For an experienced returnee its hard to beat either the Sig 4-60 or the Goldberg Tiger 11 now sold by Lanier. You won,t regret going with the sixty sizes.

Things sure have changed from the old twitchy thumbs at the toggles, eh?

If you already have that size engine, check out the 4*40 and the Mid-Star 40, both kits by Sig. They build very light and my Mid-Star flew quite well with an OS40FP.

Thanks for the responses guys... yes the old days with the Kraft Reed boxes were different... things relate a lot more to flying now than then... I can remember hitting the wrong stitch and sending a Thermic 100 glider straight in from 300 feet after getting some thermals... I would like to get back into large scale but not giant scale.. I had a Cleveland Models Stenson Reliant 108 in the sixties that was a great flier with scale built up wing ribs.. a ***** to build but a nice craft.

I was wanting to stay in the .29 range for operating field size, however will look at your suggestions. I have engines from .29 through .61 all OS and Super Tigers. I have a new OS .32 sx/h from a thought at trying choppers several years ago but didn't go that way (chicken) and to in-trenched in wings.

Welcome back dunk, good to see another from gods country here, you're just a short distance from me. I agree that the Mid Star 40 is a great flying plane, liked it better then my 4 Star 40. I would take a long look at .40 size planes and up as you can just plain see them better and that's especially helpful since you are coming back after a long lay off.

Sig LT 25 might be your cup of tea. Great prints,good wood and laser cut,We fly them with .25 to .46 2s engines,good on floats,great to learn with plus a fun plane to fly.

Welcome back.

You weren't away very long compared to some of us, so another you might consider is an Ugly Stik (by whichever name or building method you choose) -- it's got the versatility to transition from knocking off the rust to doing a variety of non-precision aerobatics once you've loosened up a little.

Howdy Dunk --

IRR at this point (something like inactive reserve waiting to see whether my number gets called and happy either way as long as I don't actually end up somewhere sandy). I was a 14 year weather guy including field time with the Army. Hard for me to believe, but it's close to ten years since I left active duty to take care of family things.

A lot of guys here don't remember some of what were early experiences for me, but this may sound familiar to you ...The first R/C I remember having my own hands on was my Dad's Jr. Falcon with an escapement setup... push the button for left, push it twice for right... wait a minute, it went the wrong way... which way did I turn last?

Well like a bicycle.... got back on and no problems.. Went by the park in AM today and spoke to a couple of the guys there one of the guys John was a club instructor and had a Sig 4*60 there with a Buddie box. Well to make a long story short got a couple of flights including ending with a full takeoff, landing and even a roll at altitude thrown in... was really surprised that I rolled out within about 15 degrees of heading. When it was over he said he didn't have any correction added during the entire flight.. Could have knocked me over with a feather. It was like I wasn't gone from R/C the last 8 years...

Well needless to say, getting ready to build now.. and as you guys suggested will go with something .60.. Also thinking of building a Flyin' King for fun down the pike before going back to something scale..
