windex method

does the windex method work on ultracoat?

RE: windex method

no. If you lay down ultracote and then use the windex method with mono over top then you are good to go. Ultracote will not work on top of other plastic covering like mono will

How about a quick recap of the "windex Method". I'm getting ready to trim out a wing I just built and I would like the stuff to last a couple flights anyway:)

1) Cover in ultracote.
2) Cut monokote to size.
3) Spray the ultracote with windex in the area you plan to put the monokote.
4) Lay the monokote on the ultracote.
5) Sqeegee out the excess windex with a credit card or similar.
6) Let sit overnight.
7) Hit the edges with a trim iron on low-med heat or use some trim solvent. The windex makes the monokote stick, but you can still easily peel it up by hand.

The "Windex Method" is this: (Note, it only works with MonoKote, not Ultracote)

Have a piece of MonoKote cut to size, shape, etc.

Spray windex (Or another window cleaner that contains ammonia) on the area that you want to apply your graphic to.

Apply your graphic directly to the wet area and slide into place.

Using a credit card (or other stiff, straight object) squeegie the excess liquid out from under the graphic (While holding it in place with the other hand)

Let sit 8 - 12 hrs

Now it is technically done, but I like to then take a Q-Tip dipped in Acetone and go around the edges just to be sure it's locked down good.

Thanks for all the info and links. I've got a big yellow rectangle that really needs some help.

May I also add this little bit of info in case you do not know, rounding the corners slightly (verses squared off edges) will help prevent lifting of the graphic. This is true for Monokote and vinyl sign trim.

Very true. WHEN you can round off a corner, do so.

But sometimes you can't (Like on the points of a star). That's when the acetone afterwards really helps.

Is the adhesive on ultracote what keeps this from working? I used transparent ultracote on my Avistar when I recovered it and the windex method worked fine. Granted, i did have some issues with some stars acting up, but everything else seemed ok.

Will trim solvent or acetone work on ultracote? Is there anything aside from CA that will work for edges on ultracote aside from heat?

Not that I am aware of

Trim solvent will work on ultracote. The "NO HEAT" brand specifies on the label--will work with ultracote or monocote, so saying Ultra over plastic film wont' work is non-sense. However, I don't know if ammonia alone will cure the ultracote glue. Don't know about acetone either. I just buy the No heat and it all works great!!!
