Building Eagle 2...What Engine?
Im finally finishing building my Eagle 2 trainer. I've already learned to fly on a Hobbico Nexstar, just felt like finally building this kit that's been kicking around for a few years, and make it a taildragger while I'm at it. I just finished building my Midwest Products P-51 that I started probably 12-15 years ago :p. Now, what engine will fit in the engine breakaway plate for the Eagle 2? Will the OS 46 LA fit in there, or should I even just stick with an OS 40? Only $10 difference between the two motors. I stuffed a 46 AX in the P51, but dont think I need that much power, and I can always swap later if I want. Thanks!

My opinion is go with the 46 LA. It will gives you some more power when you need it.
Good luck with the trainer. |
RE: Building Eagle 2...What Engine?
On my first Eagle II I had and OS .40 LA on it and I had to trim the plate for it to fit. It wasn't much, just a little. I just got my second one together and I have a SuperTigre GS-40 on the front and had to trim about another 1/8" more away for it to fit.

How was the .40 LA for power?

RE: Building Eagle 2...What Engine?
It was great for the plane, I never thought it was under powered at all and could fly with just less than half throttle. The .40 LA is light though and I had to add quite a bit of weight to the front, 4 or 6 oz. I think. With the SuperTigre it balanced perfectly with the battery under the fuel tank.
The only reason I switched engines for the second one is that I am going to put floats on and wanted a little more power. I am going to rebuild the first one for my son and put the .40 LA on it. |

I might do floats on this one as well, I'll stick with the 46

Floats are a lot of drag, espescially in the water. Go with a Pro 46 two stroke or a 91 4 stroke. Calm water will tend to keep the plane on the surface from suction.
