When balancing a prop where do you sand at? Do you take off the tip or sand some where else?

You sand the trailing edge of the heavy side of the prop. You should see if someone can show you how its done. I have seen props ruined very quickly by too agressive sanding that only took a few seconds. :mad:

Assuming you are balancing a plastic (APC or equivalent) first sand the mold flashing off the leading and trailing edges. This is the sharp parts that will really cut. Next sand the face of the prop generally near the tip. Most of these props don't need much balancing. I did receive one recently that the center hole was poorly drilled and it was not worth balancing. Never sand the back of the prop as you risk changing the pitch. An alternate method is to add paint to the prop tips. This not only helps to balance the prop but also makes it more visible when the engine is running. Add a little more than you think needed as the paint dries it will expel the solvents. If you are balancing a wood prop the paint method is preferred because if you sand off the finish you need to re apply it anyway. If you don't want to change the color just use clear.
