What are the basic principles & methods to fly a Gasser?
Hi there all,
Though Im still flying glow engine planes which are 2 stroke and I have not yet purchased any 4 stroke engine and haven't experienced one. My question is What are the principles methods and ways to fly a gas airplane. For instance like I have Edge 300 using Zenoah or ZDZ or 3W engine in it. Fuel is normal petroleum and it is added with synthetic oil? and are these engines mostly 2 strokes or in gassers 4 strokes engine are manufactured or not? These engines use spark plugs instead of glow plugs so no need of glow plug ignitor. These engines have ignition installed? ignition is activated by Tx which should be ofcourse I think more than 7 channel or is it activated manually? Does gas engine need priming? What is the purpose of choke? flowing the fuel into the engine? when to turn the choke on and when to close? besides a battery pack for receiver do we need another battery pack for ignition? Is it necessary to use high torque or digital servos or standard servos? I wanna know that ofcourse 2 stroke or 4 stroke engines are easy to set up, just add fuel, use gloplug ignitor and start it, and do priming before starting and naturally set up the needle valve check rpm, nose up and take off. But These procedures don't seem to be required for giant gassers, naturally gassers suck up more money too, but not fuel wise, I wanna know completely about gassers. I don't know whether this topic is suitable for beginners forum but its for my knowledge and I wanna know it. I would like the senior flyers who are flying gassers their inputs and their experiences plus any website which may guide the complete setup of gas airplanes as well as turbine jet airplanes. Thank you all in advance Mody |
RE: What are the basic principles & methods to fly a Gasser?
Hello Mody,
Gassers are usually 2-stroke. Some of them have a Magnito ignition system which requires no battery and some have electronic ignition, which does require its own battery. They have spark plugs so no glow starter is needed. They all use regular petroleum with oil mixed into it. The choak closes off the air intake to help the engine draw fuel faster for starting. You close the choak, flip the prop a few times until the engine "pops", then open the choak and flip some more. Some other differences are that Gas engines need a different fuel line and tank plug than a glow engine because Gasoline will dissolve the silicon fuel tubing and stopper used for glow. You can use a regular standard servo to operate the throttle. Is there anything else you would like to know? |
RE: What are the basic principles & methods to fly a Gasser?
To add to MinnFlyers comments I have just started flying a 1/4 scale Cap 232 with an Evolution GT35 engine. Some of the things I have learned thus far.
1) Do not run your ignition wires near the exhaust. They will work their way to the exhaust subsequently melt and your engine won't run. I spent about 2 hours flipping this thing over untill I found what I did. 2) Do not run your fuel line next to the exhaust. See comment one. I got to deadstick this 15 lb brick and fortunately will be able to replace/reroute the fuel line and try this again. 3) The exhaust muffler gets very hot. Hotter than any glow powered engine. 4) I use a good quality 2 stroke oil to mix with the unleaded gasoline (petrol) and carefully mix to the recomended proportions given by the engine manufacturer. In my case that is 40:1 5) Big wood props look cool:D It was recomended to me by fellow club members to use a wood prop on my gasser as you want the prop to break instead of the crank shaft on the engine... even at $23 a prop that's just insurance. 6) There is always more to learn:D |

Thanks a lot Mike B and Mr.Stang:D
I learned a lot, is there any website or link regarding how to operate and fly a gasser? and what kind of pipings are used as fuel lines? Mody |

Look into the "Giant Scale" and "Gas Engine" forums here on RCU
