NEXSTAR TRAINING AIDS ADVICE
I have a nexstar and I have got a decent amount of flights in now without crashing but I still need to get abit better at landing. I still have all my training aids on the airfoils and speed brakes. What I was wondering was how much of a difference will it make when I take these off?

taking off the speed brakes will make it faster, it will also effect your level flight trim. The droops are to prevent tip stalls at low speed so I'd leave them on for a bit.

I don't even have the AFS sensor in the plane. By droops do you mean those airfoil thing on the front of the wing?

if your going to take the flaps off then go ahead and remove the droops, they don't seem to do much at all and the plane flys much better,and faster, without them anyway.
this plane is a floater without the extras, then you can retrim it once and be done. |

Take off the brakes and droops. This WILL cause a pitch trim change so be prepared for it. If unsure of YOUR capabilities have an instructor fly the plane first and retrim it. A 2-blade prop will also improve performance if you haven't done that yet. Stay with a low pitch prop if you to keep the speed down.

A three blade prop will not slow it down faster. For that, you need a large swept area, low pitch, and low idle. The AFS will actually fight the pilot when making turns. NOT good for novices. There are many, many trainers out there that fly just great without the flaps, leading edge slats, and speed brakes. The Nextstar will, too. Take all that crap off, have an experienced pilot retrim it, and go fly. Put an 11-4 prop on it to control top speed and give some prop braking.

I already have the AFS out. I believe I have a 11-7 on it right now. I think the next time out ill probably try it without the extras. I should have no problem readjusting the trims.

Take the training aids off - it flies much better with out them. For the prop, us an 11 X 5. You're flying a big, heavy plane (mine weights 6.75 lbs), and the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGAK9&P=ML]11 X 5 Hobbico prop[/link] designed for the NextStar Select actually seems to give the best overall performance with my OS .46 AX. As far as tip stalling, I've found it is very hard to tip stall a NextStar, even with full span flapperons down as far as they'll go. I just can't get mine to tip stall or spin from any flight condition.
If the plane is landing too fast with an 11 X 5 prop, you can safely drop the ailerons about 1/8". I have one switch on my radio set to do this and find the plane is a much better flying plane. If you have a computer radio like the 7C it's easy to program in. If you don't, then just readjust the aileron linkage. Hogflyer |

I bought the nexstar trainer kit so I only have the skysport that it comes with for a radio.

Just pull those training aids off the plane, and fly with the Hobbico 11 X 5 prop. Don't worry about flapperons - they are a toy you don't need to mess with until you want to play around after you've learned to fly the wings off the plane. You will notice it will glide a lot flatter than your are used to but it doesn't take long to get used to it. Hogflyer |

As I said earlier a pitch trim change is to be expected. If I recall correctly it will try to climb sharply on wou and you will need to give it down trim. Just be ready for it and all will be fine. DO NOT let it stall on takeoff. Fly with the sticks until at a safe altitude and THEN worry about the trim.
